AbstractAn outbreak of hepatitis A occurred in a rural elementary school in Colbert County, Alabama, in October and November 1972. The outbreak was caused by sewage‐contaminated drinking water and involved 49 children and 1 adult. Acute and convalescent serum samples were obtained from the hepatitis patients, and from each of 24 unafflicted matched controls at the same time. Strikingly, the levels of the third and fourth components of complement (C'3 and C'4) were markedly reduced in the acute samples from the sick children but returned to normal in the convalescent ones; the C'3 and C'4 levels in the healthy matched controls were not reduced. In addition, antigen‐antibody complexes were found in convalescent sera from some of the sick children. AbstractThe immunopotentiating effect of the intradermal administration of a course of four doses (0.25 ml) of a standard suspension of killed C. parvum (2 mg/ml) was studied in a group of 10 asymptomatic chronic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers, as well as in 11 persons with antibodies to HBsAg (anti‐HBs) and six without HBsAg or anti‐HBs. HBsAg, anti‐HBs, and leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) studies were performed in pre‐ and post‐inoculation blood samples. C. parvum produced a substantial increase of anti‐HBs titre in persons with preexisting anti‐HBs. However, anti‐HBs responses were not induced in carriers. AbstractIn 10 patients with Guillain‐Barré syndrome a preceeding cytomegalovirus infection could be demonstrated by virus‐specific IgM antibodies that were present in high titers in 9 of the 10 patients in the first serum specimen. AbstractA new category of autoantibodies ‐ antipolymerized albumin antibodies (AAA) ‐ was discovered in 1974. Studies performed from 1974 to 1976 showed their diagnosis and prognostic values in hepatic diseases; the AAA tests [immunodiffusion (ID) and hemagglutination (HS)] made possible a good estimation of the total liver cell function. Without being specific for a viral hepatitis B infection, highly significant linear correlations were found for AAA precipitin and agglutinin positivities with presence of HBsAg. AbstractClosely related human and monkey orthopoxviruses were differentiated by serologic techniques. Antiviral sera were tested by immunodiffusion for reactivity against six different viral antigens prepared from either infected cell cultures or infected chorioallantoic membranes (CAMs) of embryonated eggs. Portions of each antiserum were separately absorbed with heterologous antigens from infected CAMs to remove common reactivity. The absorbed sera formed immunodiffusion precipitates with both types of antigen preparation and revealed specific‐character differences that made it possible to classify the viruses as variola, vaccinia, or monkeypox. Cross‐complement fixation tests were also used to examine the immunologic reactivities of antisera to detergent‐treated, purified preparations of three orthopoxviruses. AbstractA persistent infection of baby hamster kidney‐21 (BHK‐21) cells with mumps virus (BHKpi) was maintained for over 60 cell passages in the absence of antiserum. Viral persistence was demonstrated in the cultures by hemadsorption, immunofluorescence, multinucleate syncytia, and released mumps virus at the level of 102–103fluorescent focus‐forming units/ml. No detectable levels of interferon were found in cultures persistently infected with mumps virus. Approximately 85–95% of the cells contained viral antigens. Nuclear fluorescence was observed in the persistently infected cells. Mumps virus from persistently infected cultures (MuVpi) was more heat‐labile than wild‐type mumps (MuVo) when subjected to 40°C. BHKpi cells had a more rapid doubling time and a higher cloning efficiency in soft agar in comparison to BHK‐21 cells. MuVpi was also found to be temperature‐sensitive. The temperature‐sensitivity of MuVpi was determined by the efficiency of plating at 33° and 39°C. AbstractIn a 12 month survey of infants and children with gastroenteritis admitted to Fairfield Hospital, Melbourne, rotavirus was found in approximately 42% of patients. This virus was detected more often during the winter months, particularly in children aged between 12 months and 3 years. Detection of rotavirus by electron microscopy was found to be more sensitive than by counterimmunoelectrophoresis. Routine bacterial and viral studies revealed that bacterial pathogens and common enteric viruses were associated with relatively few cases of gastroenteritis. There is little doubt that rotavirus is the most important aetiological agent of acute gastroenteritis in young children in Melbourne.
