ABSTRACTThis paper addresses a class of problems, referred to as “disaggregation problems,” which lie between planning at the top level and the more detailed decisions of inventory control and scheduling at the bottom level. Most real‐world problems are sufficiently complex to warrant a sequential or top‐down approach to problem solving. However, researchers have paid scant attention to disaggregation until very recently. The resulting lack of an interfacing mechanism diminishes the utility of solution procedures for aggregate planning, inventory control, and scheduling. In order to draw attention to this gap, a taxonomy of disaggregation problems is developed for both manufacturing and service organizations. ABSTRACTTo provide effective managerial support for decisions related to production planning and scheduling processes, it is useful to partition the set of decisions into a hierarchical framework. ABSTRACTThis paper presents a branch and bound algorithm for assigning men to machines in a production system. The labor assignment problem of concern in this paper occurs when 1) a single operator can service several semi‐automatic machines simultaneously, 2) the service and machine processing times are different among the machines and are deterministic, 3) a strict cyclic service discipline is assumed, and 4) the combined costs of idle labor and machine time are to be minimized. ABSTRACTA simultaneous model is proposed for the planning of production, inventory, workforce, and working capital levels over several periods. By exploiting the capabilities of linear programming, the model provides relevant information more efficiently than would be typical of the more traditional approach, in which planning is decomposed along functional lines. A detailed example is presented in order to illustrate the advantages of the simultaneous model.

ABSTRACTThis paper develops a methodology for assessing the impact of a comprehensive pollution control program on income distribution. A regional input‐output table is employed to determine the overall effect of pollution control costs on prices. These price changes, are then translated into changes in consumption expenditures by income groups, which serve as a measure of the impact on consumers.The validity of this methodology is tested on the metropolitan Philadelphia region. It was found that the EPA air quality standards would raise the spending of middle income groups by about 3 percent as compared to about 2 percent increase for the highest and the lowest income groups.The paper concludes with an examination of the advantages and limitations of the proposed methodolog
