The size of the zooplankton consumed by rainbow trout and yellow perch was studied in two Michigan lakes and compared with the size of the limnetic zooplankton. One of the study lakes was managed for both rainbow trout and warmwater game fish (a “combination” lake), and the other was managed solely for rainbow trout after it was reclaimed with toxaphene. Plankton samples were collected in the summer both before and after the introduction of rainbow trout, and compared with plankton in the stomachs of fish taken at the same time.

A study of anadromous sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) at Love Lake, Washington County, Maine, provided evidence that newly transformed lampreys were attaching themselves and in many instances feeding upon landlocked salmon and other fishes. Examination of 660 salmon from 4.5 to 23.5 inches long revealed that 564 (85%) had been attacked by newly transformed sea lampreys. Salmon were attacked more frequently than all other species combined. The greatest number of lamprey marks observed on any one salmon was eight, and the average number on salmon that has been attacked was 2.4.

Food of walleye larvae in Oneida Lake during the first 6 weeks of life in 1961–63 consisted mainly of copepods supplemented by cladocera and fish. As walleye larvae grew from 7.0 to 24.0 mm in length they ate larger food organisms. More fish were eaten during 1962 than 1961 or 1963. Of the crustacean food the copepod, Epischura, was more common in 1961 stomachs than in 1962 or 1963. Feeding commenced before complete absorption of the yolk reserves. For the three years, 31% of the sac fry contained food while 91% of the post-yolk sac fry had fed.

The acute toxicity of Sevin® (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) and its hydrolytic product 1-naphthol to 10 species of marine animals was determined. Sevin was more toxic to larval and adult crustaceans (Upogebia pugettensis, Callianassa californiensis, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, Cancer magister) than to larval and adult mollusks (Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas, Clinocardium nuttallii) and juvenile fishes (Cymatogaster aggregata, Parophrys vetulus, Gasterosteus aculeatus). Sevin was 30 to 300 times more toxic than 1-naphthol to the crustaceans but less toxic than 1-naphthol to the mollusks and fishes.

The natural production of sulfides is responsible for poor channel catfish production in many acid lakes in northeast Texas. The TLmof un-ionized hydrogen sulfide for channel catfish fry ranged from 0.8 ppm at pH of 6.8 to 0.53 at pH 7.8. At pH 7.0 the TLmof this gas is 1.0 ppm for fingerling catfish, 1.3 for advanced fingerlings, and 1.4 for adult channel catfish. Small fish were also killed more quickly when exposed to these concentrations. Maximum concentrations of hydrogen sulfide are produced in the spring. Channel catfish populations can be maintained by continued stocking of adult fish or by raising the pH with agricultural limestone, which in turn lowers the toxic un-ionized hydrogen sulfide.

Atlantic cod were tagged and liberated at sea. Length data from recaptured individuals were examined for growth. Cod marked with Lea tags anchored internally grew at about the same rate as those marked with Petersen discs attached dorsally. The tagged fish grew at about the same rate as untagged fish.

Contribution of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) produced by river systems entering Puget Sound, Washington, to the commercial troll fishery off the coasts of Washington and Vancouver Island in 1953 was estimated using the recoveries of fin-marked salmon. A commercial fishery in Puget Sound was used as a sampling tool. The production area was defined by the percentage exploitation by the Puget Sound fishery of runs of coho salmon to river systems in the Puget Sound area. Puget Sound streams as defined produced about 9% of the coho troll fishery catch off Washington and Vancouver Island in 1953. Major limitation of this study was the degree of accuracy in defining the production area.
