摘要:
A contemporary dilemma in nursing is the order to care in a society that refuses to value caring. The authors analyze the historical creation of this dilemma and its consequences for nursing. In addition, they explore the meaning of the concept of caring from a nursing perspective, along with the impact of technology on patients, providers, and caring. Finally, a framework and strategies for the promotion of caring within the discipline of nursing are presented.

摘要:
While the average woman in the U.S. Civil War times lived to the age of about 40, a group of 17 extraordinary nurses–including Louisa Mae Alcott, Dorothea Dix, and Clara Barton–survived to much older ages. A variety of possible reasons, from social and marital status to altruism and religion, is explored. More than any tangible factor, however, the presence of a “pioneering spirit” seems to be at the root of their lo

摘要:
Nurse educators often struggle to take the mystique out of research for undergraduate students.A learning experience to implement the research process at a level appropriate for senior nursing baccalaureate students presented itself during a community clinical practicum. Students who had completed a health assessment of a seniors retiree club identified lack of membership growth as a concern. Their instructor encouraged and helped them to investigate this problem further by applying research concepts. The experience demonstrates that nursing research can be incorporated successfully in the clinical area.

摘要:
Adolescent pregnancy continues to receive significant attention from healthcare workers across the United States. Most of this attention focuses on the adolescent mother. This article focuses on the adolescent father. Pertinent literature is reviewed, and nursing guidelines for supporting the adolescent father through the childbearing experience are suggested.

摘要:
This article describes the evolution of a chart audit tool that became an integral part of a nursing care monitoring and evaluation system at two healthcare agencies in South Dakota. These agencies, an acute care hospital and a federal healthcare agency, continue to use the audit tool for multiple purposes within their institutions. The initial design of the tool had two objectives: to measure objectively the quality and effectiveness of patient care provided by the nursing staff and to educate nurses about expectations of their roles as case managers or case associates. The tool has been revised and continues to be modified to fit needs within hospital, ambulatory care, and community based care settings, to meet program standards for accreditation, and other purposes within each agency.

摘要:
To spark productive and continuing dialogue, good conversation needs to end with a light touch, yet one that whets the appetite for more.Nursing Forumhonors this dictum by giving “The Last Word” for this issue to Ms. R. Kane, a registered nurse at a small, unnamed hospital in an obscure community. Ms. Kane has been troubled for some time by nursing theories that either elude her comprehension or ignore salient realities. She has elected to address this problem by developing a collection of mid‐range theories she believes will improve this situ
