摘要:
Icings on the Putorana Plateau were studied using satellite imagery; the laboratory interpretations were verified from the air under field conditions. Over 200 icings have been recorded, with a total area of about 2000 km2. The majority of the groundwater icings are located at altitudes of 500–600 m, and the volume of ice contained in them totals 3 km3. River and snowmelt icings are widespread. Taking these icings into account the total volume of ice in the Putorana icings amounts to about 5 km3; the relative area occupied by icings is 0.7%; and icing runoff amounts to 12 mm. Icings have a major impact on the morphogenesis of river valleys and on the vegetation, and produce a characteristic landscape. A map of icings on the Putorana Plateau at a scale of 1:1 million has been compiled.

摘要:
Two leading Soviet delegates to an international conference on the role of polar regions in global environmental change (Fairbanks, Alaska, June 1990) outline key issues and new research directions discussed at the conference. Seven high‐priority interdisciplinary problems were identified as warranting future intensive work: marine and continental ecosystems’ reactions to external influences, the role of wetlands in biogeochemical circulation, the dynamics of marine biota in ice‐edge environments, effects of glaciers and ice sheets on ocean level fluctuations, water circulation in the Arctic, chemistry and dynamics of the Arctic atmosphere, and interactions within the ocean‐ice‐atmosphere system.
