In 1974–75 30 muskoxen were introduced to the Bikada River area, east of Lake Taymyr on Taymyr Peninsula; 10 were from Banks Island (Canada) and 20 from Nunivak Island (Alaska). Originally kept in large enclosures, the animals have progressively been set at liberty. The first calves were born in 1978 and by the end of 1981 the population had increased to 51 animals. By this stage it was felt that the muskoxen from both source areas had completely adjusted to their new ecological conditions.

Of 128 nature reserves operating in the USSR (as of 1 January, 1981) only 11 were located in the Far North and of 21 existing republic sanctuaries in the RSFSR only one lay in the Far North. The authors survey the existing nature reserves and sanctuaries, outlining the history of development and major features of each and also examine proposals which have surfaced at various times for nature reserves and sanctuaries in the different parts of the North. They conclude by making a number of suggestions for creation of a number of new nature reserves and preserves with a view to achieving better representation of the ecological diversity of the Far North within protected zones of various types.

In a historical survey of glaciological research in the Soviet Arctic the author traces the impact of such programs as the Second International Polar Year, the International Geophysical Year and the International Hydrological Decade on the advancement of knowledge in this area. She reviews achievements of Soviet glaciologists on Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land and most recently on Severnaya Zemlya.

Until 1981 the personnel of the Soviet Antarctic Expeditions traveled between the USSR and Antarctica by sea. In that year movements of personnel by air began. The critical factor was that in 1980 the first Soviet snow airstrip for heavy wheeled aircraft was built at Molodezhnaya. The authors review the development of the techniques required for constructing such an airstrip on snow and firn.

Over the period 1979–81 the Twenty‐Fifth Soviet Antarctic Expedition was operating in the Antarctic; 296 wintering personnel and 293 seasonal workers operated from 8 different stations. The author reviews the build‐up of the operation during its first 25 years, in terms of numbers of support ships, overland transport, aircraft, generator capacity, fuel tank capacity, radios and buildings.

摘要:
The author attempts to quantify the amount of water released (by various means) by the world's glaciers, and to determine the variations in these figures provoked by the warming trend which was observed for the first half of this century, and the cooling trend observed in the 1960s and 1970s. Unfortunately Antarctica has generally had to be excluded from these calculations since data on a number of components of the water balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet are simply not available. Perhaps most significant are the author's predictions that the anticipated future rise in air temperatures will provoke increased precipitation and hence increased accumulation on the major ice sheets. Even despite increased melting in coastal areas of Greenland and Antarctica the net effect will be a positive mass balance and ultimately a lowering of sea level.

摘要:
The South Shetland Islands lie within the oceanic geocryological zone of the Antarctic. King George Island, one of the largest islands of the archipelago, presents a variety of landforms of cryogenic‐denudational, nival, solifluction and cryostructural types. A distinct pattern can be discerned in the distribution of these landforms, controlled by geomorphology, climate and geocryological features. The cryogenic landforms most typical of the island are described; they include cryogenic‐denudational and solifluction terraces, nivation cirques, sorted polygons and circles and linear microforms produced by frost‐heaving on slopes.

On the basis of fieldwork at 12 coastal sites on the west coast of Spitsbergen in 1977 and 1979 the author evaluates the ecosystems of this remarkably productive Arctic environment. A brief survey of the vegetation (vascular and cryptogamic) and fauna (both vertebrate and invertebrate) leads to a classification of the terrestrial ecosystems. This is followed by a brief quantitative assessment of the productivity of the terrestrial ecosystems. Perhaps the most striking fact which emerges is the major role played by interlinkages between the marine and terrestrial ecosystems, as best exemplified by the “luxuriant”; vegetation associated with bird colonies.
