摘要:
Slope‐forming processes in South Victoria Land occur under the most severe climatic conditions. Very low temperatures are combined with extreme aridity which rarely permits surface runoff. In contrast to the situation in arctic regions, slope erosion and solifluction contribute little to the slope morphology.

摘要:
The author delimits the boundaries of the Southern Ocean and divides it into three distinct latitudinal zones, namely the temperate, subantarctic and antarctic zones. Taking each zone in turn he then examines its economic significance and potential in terms of shipping routes, mineral resources and fisheries. Probably the most significant economic potential of the Southern Ocean lies in its vast resources of krill, widely considered to be a future major world source of protein, and in the reserves of hydrocarbons known (or suspected) to lie beneath the continental shelves.

Krill(Euphausia superba)represents an indispensable link of many marine antarctic food webs and hence proposals for a massive expansion in the exploitation of this protein source must be examined with great care. The author reviews the known data on the life cycle of krill and concludes that water density variations and its circulation are the most important factors controlling its distribution and numbers. While it is generally established that the life span ofEuphausia superbain the ocean is of the order of 2½‐4 years the author suggests that it may well be longer under ideal circumstances. However, since, after spawning, the krill is carried down to abyssal depths by the descending water at the Antarctic Convergence it is rarely given the opportunity to achieve its maximum potential age. It is further suggested that this point in the life cycle, i.e., after spawning and before the downwards plunge at the Antarctic Convergence would be the optimal point for intense exploitation since it would have minimal impact on krill stocks or on the other components of the marine biocenosis.

摘要:
The paper presents isotope and geochemical evidence obtained from a study of a core extending down to bedrock, extracted from Vavilov Glacier Dome, Severnaya Zemlya. The mean thickness of the ice is 556 m. Average annual accumulation values were determined from different depths on the basis of reference layers withβ‐active isotopes and seasonal variations in δ18O and Cl−. Hence Cl−;variations may serve as a paleoclimatic indicator and may provide valuable additional information for the interpretation of δ18O profiles. The δ18O curve obtained from the Vavilov ice core is morphologically different from those from Camp Century, Greenland and Devon Island; this indicates that local conditions play an important role in the formation of the isotope composition of precipitation. It follows from the δ18O profile that climatic conditions around 10,000–12,000 B.P. were close to those of the present, which is in keeping with paleontological and geochronological data.
