The analysis of variable-structure systems in the sliding mode yields the concept of equivalent control, which leads naturally to a new method for determining the zeros and zero directions of square linear multivariable systems. The analysis presented is conceptually easy and computationally attractive.

A recent paper by Cordero and Mayne has established convergence of a self-tuning regulator with variable forgetting factor. The short paper shows that a similar result can be proved for ordinary recursive least squares with covariance resetting.

The paper first reviews the status of the Walsh-functions (WF) approach to the problem of parameter identification in continuous dynamical systems. The WF method of analysis and parameter estimation relies on the use of the so-called operational matrix for integration. For higher-order systems, the existing operational matrix has so far been applied after being raised to the required power. This procedure results in an accumulation of error at each stage of integration. To improve this situation, the paper introduces one-shot operational matrices for repeated integration (OSOMRI) via Walsh functions. The superiority of OSOMRI is demonstrated in problems of analysis and identification of higher-order systems. The paper then presents a direct noniterative method of parameter estimation for lumped linear systems in the presence of small unknown delays employing Walsh delay matrices developed recently by the authors. When the delay terms are not small, the results of this noniterative method will be considerably in error. However, these results can be taken as good initial values for the inevitable refining iterative shift algorithm of Prasada Rao and Sivakumar. The paper also presents an efficient multistep algorithm for parameter estimation in systems with large unknown time delays.

The paper deals with some aspects of automatic generation control of the two-area hydrothermal system provided with classical controllers. A comprehensive procedure for continuous-and discrete-mode optimisation of integral controllers using an integral squared error criterion is suggested. Investigations reveal that the optimal integral gains achieved through continuous-mode analysis are totally unacceptable in the discrete mode for the sampling periods used in practice. Moreover, for all practical purposes, the optimum integral gains in the discrete mode can be achieved by neglecting the generation rate constraints from the mathematical model, in contrast to the case in the continuous mode. Analysis also highlights significant differences in the dynamic performance of the hydrothermal system due to step-load perturbation in either of the areas. An attempt is also made to recommend an optimum sampling period.

For MRAS, Monopoli has proposed an error augmentation scheme which facilitates the design of stable adaptive loops. Narendra and Peterson interpret this as imposing a quasi-commutation on a linear stable differential operator and a time-varying gain. A simple derivation using convolution integrals is given. The augmentation signal is associated with cancellation of an identified parameter rate component of the output of the adapting system.
