Examination of routine carotid angiograms from 1,000 patients gave 52 definite and 80 possible cases in which the superior ophthalmic vein was filled with contrast medium. Only one of these cases suffered from sinus thrombosis. In the other cases no certain correlation could be found between the angiographic or clinical diagnosis and the filling of the orbital vein. However, the performance of the angiography under intubation narcosis seemed to be a factor favouring the filling of the vein. It is noteworthy that the veins are much more frequently represented on the left side than on the right.

‘Neuro-Behçet’ is not a rare disease in the United Arab Republic, as it was possible to detect 22 cases in just 3 years. The detection of the true incidence of Behçet syndrome and the true percentage of ‘Neuro-Behçet’ depends on the combined search by all specialists concerned. The similarity between the presenting clinical pictures and the accepted, though sometimes etiologically vague, clinical syndromes is discussed in an attempt to render the consideration of ‘neuro-Behçet’ in differential diagnosis reasonably acceptable. This consideration is justified in the presence of the oro-genital and ocular manifestations, or a history thereof. The mere affection of the nervous system does not indicate a bad prognosis. The prognosis depends, as in many other neurological diseases, on the site of the lesion. Initial big doses of systemic steroids, with a permanent maintenance dose, are recommended. 68 patients with a peripheral neuropathy were re-examined clinically and electroneurographically. They were divided into four groups: 24 patients had polyneuritis of the Guillain-Barré type, 14 suffered from neuropathy with diabetes mellitus, 5 from neuropathy with alcohol abuse, and in 24 patients the aetiology was unknown. The re-examinations followed after time intervals between 21 months and 10.5 years after the first admission to hospital. The frequency of remaining disabilities, determined neurographically and by physical examination was compared with the severity of the symptoms in the acute stage of the disease. The results show that polyneuritis Guillain-Barré follows the most favourable course. The most numerous defects occur in peripheral neuropathies with diabetes mellitus or alcohol addiction. The maximum span of conduction velocities between the motor nerve fibres of a muscle (hypothenar) proved to be a more precise measure for the evaluation of residual damage to the peripheral nerves than the maximum conduction velocity. In 4 cases we were able to show by re-examinations that early values for the maximum conduction velocity lying in the ‘lower normal’ range had later to be interpreted as pathologically decreased. In 10 subjects with Ramsay-Hunt (RH) syndrome and epilepsy, and in one case of Lance-Adams (LA) syndrome, 21 polygraphic sleep records were made. In the cases of RH syndrome the main findings were as follows: (a) Cyclic organization of sleep. The cyclic organization of sleep was quite well preserved in all cases and all the sleep stages were represented with percentages within normal ranges. Sleep pattern. In the majority of the cases the identification of the different sleep stages was particularly difficult, often because of the rarity of the spindles, K-complexes and vertex sharp waves. Modifications of the epileptic discharges during sleep. During wakefulness the abnormalities were characterized by brief (0.5–2 sec) bursts of generalized spike and wave discharges at 4–5 cps, usually of low voltage. During sleep two types of epileptic discharges were observed: the first consisted of generalized bursts of spike and wave discharges similar to those observed during wakefulness; these discharges were always present during slow sleep but less frequent than during wakefulness; in three cases they persisted during REM sleep. The second type of abnormality consisted of spikes or multiple spikes, isolated or in long-lasting discharges up to 20 sec of duration, focalized or maximal over the vertex and central regions. These spikes observed in 7 patients, occurred in all stages of sleep and were particularly evident during REM sleep. Ictal electroclinical seizures of a clonic type, sometimes of long duration (up to 20 min) occurred during slow sleep awakening the subjects. In the LA syndrome the most important finding was the apparition during sleep, and particularly during REM sleep, of focal spikes over the central and midline regions, similar to those observed in RH syndr

Morphological, histochemical and electrophysiological studies were made on human fetal central nervous tissue maintained for up to 56 days in vitro. It was observed that most of the neurones and glial cells in spinal cord and brain stem cultures are more differentiated than those in cultures of cerebellum and cerebral cortex. AChE-containing neurones could be demonstrated in cultures of spinal cord. Intracellular microelectrode recordings were made on neurones of spinal cord and brain stem cultures. The membrane potentials recorded from spinal neurones ranged from –25 to –60 mV with an average of –44 mV.
