摘要:
The behaviour of an air-water mixed solar collector is simultated using meteorological data for Perpignan (France) and one region of Brazil close to the equator. The absorber surface of the collector constitutes a toothed profile. The water streams in open channels while the air flows in the ducts composed by the insulation and the absorber plate. Two cases were considered: the case in which the water and the air move in the same direction and the one in which the fluids move in opposite directions. The temperature distributions of the different components of the collector are calculated by using an implicit finite-differences method. A computer program was developed to evaluate the thermal performances of the collector as a function of various design parameters and water and air flow rates.

摘要:
This study is an attempt to define thermal comfort requirements for Friday prayer during the hot season of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to Islam, a Muslim should perform his prayers five times a day. The obligatory five prayers are Subuh prayer immediately before dawn, Thohor prayer in the afternoon, Assor prayer in late afternoon, Maghreb prayer immediately after sunset, and Ishaa prayer early evening. Generally, Muslims are encouraged to perform all five prayers in a mosque. Friday prayer that replaces Thohor prayer once a week, should take place in one of the main mosques of the neighbourhood. The mosque where Friday prayer could be performed is known as Friday mosque. Usually Friday prayer is attended by hundreds of worshipers and takes place in the afternoon. Since the summer of Riyadh is characterised by a very high temperature and a very low relative humidity, the indoor climate of the Friday mosque (Al-Masjed Al-Gamae) needs a special study.

摘要:
The effect of three main irreversibilities existing in thermoelectric devices on the performance of a thermoelectric heat pump is investigated. The coefficient of performance and the heating load of the heat pump are derived. The optimal performance of the heat pump at maximum coefficient of performance is discussed, and the rational working region of the heat pump is determined. The optimal structure of the device is also described. The results obtained here are more realistic than those derived from nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

摘要:
This paper is a follow-up to “Compiling Renewable Energy Statistics” which appeared in Volume 13 of this journal. The paper argued the need for a project aimed at compiling information on renewable energy schemes running throughout the UK, and went on to describe the Renewable Energy STATisticS (RESTATS) database which was being developed and managed by ETSU. Since the project began, data are now collected from a variety of sources, including other databases and updated annually for publication in the Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES). Future plans for RESTATS involve incorporating the database into a single system being set up to consolidate all renewable energy data held by ETSU; in addition, opportunities for using Geographic Information Systems (GIs) to assist in surveys and promoting results are being investigated. RESTATS is arguably the most reliable means by which the success of the UK renewables programme can be both measured and monitored.

摘要:
Timber, while being a low energy intensive material, requires a relatively high energy input in its processing operations, particularly drying. The schedules used for drying timber have largely been developed empirically by various government laboratories, trade organizations and sawmill operators. The schedules are generally low temperature and conservative which can mean unnecessary energy consumption and needlessly long residence times in the kiln. Thus processing costs are high due to recurrent energy costs and a relatively low return on capital investment in physical plant. This paper considers the energy related aspects of timber in general and the results of an empirical study in particular which indicate that the inherent energy advantages of using timber can be improved by the use of High Temperature Drying (HTD) techniques.

摘要:
A multi-stage endoreversible refrigerator for low temperature applications is modeled and described. A performance analysis of the system is carried out. The optimal combination between two adjacent cycles in the multi-stage system is discussed. The optimal ratios of the temperatures of the working fluids in the heat transfer processes and the optimal distribution of the heat transfer areas of the heat exchangers in the multi-stage system are also determined.
