摘要:
This paper considers the potential impact, the technical state of the art and the barriers which must be overcome to ensure that school buildings in the UK can benefit rather than suffer from passive solar energy. The construction and use requirements of schools favour the use of passive solar techniques. Short daytime occupancy combined with high glazing in many existing schools and a requirement for a “view” in new build provides an excellent scenario for a calculated balance between daylighting, free heat, high insulation and summer overheating. Schools lend themselves to replication of design and central control, while modern electronic energy management systems can provide a fast response and controlled reduction in conventional heating to take maximum advantage of free solar heat.

摘要:
To understand the various exercises into sunlighting one must go back to the origins of daylighting and sunlighting design in the 1920s and 1930s when health was considered of importance enough to require large windows and fully openable verandahs in our schools. The problems were as many as the benefits so that by the late 1940s, legislation was introduced to fix the daylighting quality and so the 5% daylight factor (DF) was introduced as a design aim. Later, in the 1950s, daylight factor was re-defined and a 2% DF minimum target was introduced, the previous 5% being properly identified as a Sky Factor.

摘要:
A multi-disciplinary appraisal of a passive solar primary school in Cornwall is presented. The building was found to be energy efficient and well liked by the teaching staff. Whilst problems were noted in ventilation control and air-quality the building was considered to be a successful example of passive solar design.

摘要:
The performance results of two retrofitted buildings with passive and hybrid systems are presented. The main aim of the evaluation is to determine with reasonable accuracy the energy savings and thus cost effectiveness of the retrofit measures. Suggestions for improvements to enhance solar contributions are also discussed. The results show that further efforts have to be made, both at design level and implementation level to enhance the final quality of future realizations.
