摘要:
The UK electricity market is being opened up to full competition in stages, starting in September 1998. This radical change means that consumers can contract with suppliers of their choice, rather than just with their local Regional Electricity Companies. It also makes it possible for purveyors of renewable energy to offer “green” power from renewable energy sources direct to consumers, although they are likely, at least initially, to have to be charged a premium price.

摘要:
This paper describes the design of a steam jet ejector. The ejector forms the major component in an ejector cycle, which could be installed in vehicles to provide air-conditioning. The cycle could be driven by waste heat provided by the exhaust from the engine and/or cooling water supply.

摘要:
Malaysia expects to join the ranks of the world's group of developed countries by the year 2020. It has certainly experienced the suitably high rates of economic growth over the past decade consistent with such expectations. Current financial instability in the Asian block, coupled with a growing awareness of environmental factors, may induce some hesitation and require changes in direction to be made, but the country, through the Prime Minister, remains committed to achieving its industrialisation goal. With improving wealth comes enhanced levels of energy consumption. Fortunately for Malaysia, it is blessed with abundant supplies of indigenous energy resources, in particular natural gas, oil, coal and hydro, in sufficient quantities to both satisfy the expected rise in demand and to allow considerable export volume, earning valuable income. However, the enormous increase in energy consumption does have environmental consequences. Carbon dioxide emissions are anticipated to grow by 57.1% between 1990 and 2000, with a further 42.6% between 2000 and 2020. If Malaysia is typical of a developing country, world CO2levels can only increase over the same period.

摘要:
This paper is concerned with testing an absorption-recompression chiller using water/potassium formate (H2O/HCOOK) as the working fluid. A limitation of current conventional absorption chillers is that they can be used only with a few refrigerant/absorbent combinations, principally water/lithium bromide. Concentrated lithium bromide solutions have a relatively high crystallisation temperature and can solidify or “freeze” inside the chiller unit. They are also corrosive to metals and very expensive. Many different refrigerant/absorbent combinations have been cited in the literature, but these have similar disadvantages to water/lithium bromide solution. This paper evaluates the performance of a new working fluid namely, water/potassium formate (H2O/HCOOK). The physical properties of potassium formate carry many benefits, i.e. it is less corrosive, less expensive to manufacture, and has a lower density and viscosity than absorbents such as lithium bromide. A small-scale chiller was constructed and tested in the laboratory. Experimental work was carried out using conventional refrigerant/absorbent combinations such as water/lithium bromide (H2O/LiBr).

摘要:
An irreversible simplified model for a Stirling cryocooler is presented in this paper. This model takes into account the finite-rate heat transfer, finite-time evolution of the cycle's regenerative processes and the friction irreversibility. The maximum cooling load and the corresponding coefficient of performance (COP) at the maximum cooling load are derived. The effects of the regenerative time, finite-rate heat transfer and friction on the optimal COP at the maximum cooling load are found. A numerical example demonstrates the relation between the cooling load and the COP.

摘要:
This study reports an experiment to investigate the feasibility of a passive heating roof-pond system on an existing room in the cold winter conditions of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Statistical analyses of data recorded during the winter season of 1996–97, are carried out to evaluate the thermal peformance of the proposed system. Total effective heating and the heating power of the roof pond system are computed and analysed. Results indicate that the roof-pond system is capable of maintaining warm indoor air temperature conditions. The statistical formulae for this system are presented and used to estimate the indoor daily average air Dry Bulb Temperature (DBTAvg-indoor] created by the system. Validation of the proposed formulae is also presented.
