摘要:
In an earlier article Cruz and Perkins (1964) presented a generalization of the Bode (1945) sensitivity criterion to multivariate stationary systems. This paper shows that effective design procedures for the multivariate case can be developed from the generalized criteria.

摘要:
This paper addresses itself to an examination of the desirability of orthogonal expansion in identification and a class of sub-optimal control problems. It is shown that there is little difference between the orthogonal technique and a method based on the direct minimization of the (weighted) integral of error squared or some quadratic performance criterion. It is shown that the orthogonal approach is equivalent to a particular method of matrix inversion. The flexibility and ease of use of both techniques are compared.

摘要:
In certain space missions a mirror is used to convert solar energy to forms suitable for use in a space craft. Effective operations of such a system requires accurate following and an initial acquiring of the sun. This paper describes a method based on momentum exchange from rotating flywheels to a platform to initially acquire the sun.

摘要:
A describing function is evaluated for backlash taking into account the changes in momentum that occur due to the sudden impact of input and output members. For the simple case considered (ignoring friction) it is shown that the value of the describing function depends only on a non-dimensional number2K/α. The conditions under which such a describing function can yield useful results are also investigated.

摘要:
The characteristic function method is employed to study the output spectral density and signal-to-noise ratio of a full-wave error function limiter. The input signal and noise are considered to be sample functions from independent Gaussian random processes. The results are obtained as a function of the input signal-to-noise ratio, degree of limiting and bias, Limiter and signal parameters are expressed in terms of known functions which may be easily programmed to yield numerical results. †Communicated by the Authors.

摘要:
The possibility of using a model reference adaptive control scheme to improve the control of a rotary solids drier is examined; in this process time delay makes efficient and accurate control difficult when conventional feed back control is used. The choice of realistic performance criterion is discussed which is suitable for computation by a digital computer. It is shown that effective control can be achieved by optimizing the performance of a model representing the part of the process without the time delay, and storing the optimum control signal for the duration of the time delay before applying it to the process. Various optimizing procedures are presented and it is shown that a particular iterative procedure gives the best results. The problem of the drift which will occur if the model does not accurately match the process is discussed and it is suggested that this may be overcome by using a direct feedback loop to trim the process output. This is part of an integrated research programme in the control of solid material processes and some directions for future work are indicated.

摘要:
The problem considered is the stability of multi-variable feedback systems having several, possibly time-varying, non-linear elements. No specific structure is assumed and the problem is formulated in terms of a matrix transfer function G(s) of the linear part of the system. Several examples of different structures are given with the corresponding form of G(s). The stability criteria illustrated are extensions of the Popov criterion to the multi-variable case which have been proved elsewhere. Examples are given for which improved results are obtained in a more simple and straightforward manner than those obtained previously.

摘要:
The properties of the Ito stochastic differential equation give a simple derivation of differential equations for expected values of arbitrary functions of stochastic systems. In particular, differential equations for the moments of the system are derived. It is cautioned that, care must be taken when applying these results to noisy systems occurring in practice.
