A sequence of vectors {x(t)} with dimensionNis given, such thatx(t+1) is obtained fromx(t) by introducingpnew elements, deletingpold ones, and shifting the others in some fashion. The sequence of vectors $ is sought. This paper presents a method of calculating these vectors with proportional-to-Npoperations and memory locations, in contrast to the conventional way which requires proportional-to-N2operations and memory locations. A non-symmetric case is also treated.

In this paper an iterative procedure for obtaining a minimum-fuel minimum-time control for a linear discrete system is suggested. The procedure suggested is based on the third form of the simplex method from linear programming and appears to be computationally more efficient than other known techniques.

The problem of constructing a Hurwitz polynomial Â(s) of degreen, under the condition that the coefficients up to and including that of 8m−1are given, is discussed, Root locus arguments are used to establish necessary and sufficient conditions for stabilizability withm= l, 2, 3 and sufficient conditions form> 3. A Routh array approach yields necessary and sufficient conditions form= 4 and a general method of attack form> 4 The origin of the problem (in the design of tracking servo-mechanisms) is explained, and a procedure for producing a system with specified type number is outlined.

Recent results on system type for linear multivariable servomechanisma are applied to a previously proposed type r multivariable servomechanism structure to obtain a new configuration. The latter possesses design freedom not present in the first configuration ; this permits optimization of certain transient response properties of the closed-loop system without affecting previously specified system type and closed-loop pole location. An example is presented which demonstrates over a 35% improvement in integral-square tracking error relative to that for the original configuration.

A predator-prey System is modelled by a pair of ordinary differential equations, and the qualitative effects of prey nutrient enrichment and predator harvesting at a rate proportional to the predator population size are studied. Some theoretical analysis concerning the stability of equilibrium points and the existence of stable limit cycles are included. Three models are examined as examples, and for two of them computer simulations are included to illustrate the changes in qualitative behaviour under nutrient enrichment and increase of harvesting effort. The essential difference between this study and our previous work on constant-rate harvesting (Brauer et al. 1976) is that, here, extinction of predators in finite time is impossible although the predator population may tend to zero as l→∞

In this paper a theorem is presented which exhibits the dynamical structure of closed-loop discrete-time tracking systems by expressing the transfer-function matrices of such systems in terms of the controllable canonical form (Brunovsky 1966) of the matrix pair which characterizes the time-domain representation of such systems. This structure theorem is illustrated by determining the transfer-function matrix of a time-optimal discrete-time tracking system previously designed in the time-domain by Bradshaw and Porter (1975).

The optimal filtering theory of Kalman and Bucy is extended to continuous linear systems with time delay. The optimal filter is developed as a set of ordinary differential equations whose number increases with time. Approximations to the optimal filter that lead to implementable algorithms are presented.

A multilevel scheme is proposed to construct decentralized estimators for large linear systems. The scheme is numerically attractive since only observability tests of low-order subsystems are required. Equally important is the fact that the constructed estimators are reliable under structural perturbations and can tolerate a wide range of non-linearities in coupling among the subsystems.
