In this, the second of two papers related to the non-linear properties of discrete-continuous control systems with signal dependent sampling constraints, results are presented which evidence their non-linear behaviour for simple transients. Furthermore, the concept of ‘deficiency’ has been extended to discrete properties associated with ‘discrete linearity’ in a series of ‘weaker’ definitions.

This paper describes an analytical-graphical procedure which permits the closed loop frequency response of two-dimensional, non-linear, control systems to be evaluated. Amplitude and phase response, jump resonance and frequency entrainment are the characteristics which are predicted by this procedure. It is applicable to both symmetrical and non-symmetrical systems and restrictions do not have to be placed on the amplitudes and phase angles of the sinusoidal input signals. Describing functions are used to represent the responses of the non-linear elements.

In this paper a modified equivalent gain expression is determined for a class of non-linear transfer characteristics subjected to Gaussian random disturbances. The non-linearites considered are of the non-memory saturating piecewise-linear type, which are important both in their own right and because they can be used to approximate, to any desired degree of accuracy, many other non-linear transfer characteristics.

Certain well-known sampling schemes are shown to be special cases of the random gating of stationary random signals. The evaluation of the spectral densities of the outputs of various types of samplers using contour integration techniques is considered.

Impulse response of linear time invariant systems is partitioned by dividing time axis into equal intervals of time. Then impulse response is expressed as a sum of partitioned portions of impulse response. Each individual portion of impulse response is approximated by a finite sum of Legendre polynomials, satisfying integral squared error criterion. In this investigation an experimental procedure is suggested to evaluate the coefficients of these polynomials to cahieve the best approximation. Knowing these coefficients the best approximation to impulse response is obtained us illustrated by the examples considered. If the coefficients of the input signal are also known then it is shown that the values of the output response at the partitioning instants can be computed.
