摘要:
The Latino population is one of the fastest growing populations in the country and, relative to other groups, it is a population which must cope with a number of immigration-related stressors. As a result, Latino adolescents may be at special risk for emotional distress and drug use in Latino adolescents. Comorbidity of emotional distress and drug use, the question of whether emotional distress is an antecedent or consequence of drug use, assessment issues, and the relationship between emotional distress, drug use, and high risk behaviors are among the issues addressed. In a survey of primarily 9th and 10th grade immigrant Mexican students, emotional distress was assessed using three abbreviated scales of depression, hostility, and anxiety based on the Hopkins Symptom checklist, a history of suicide attempts was also assessed. Frequency and quantity of ten substances including alcohol, cigarettes, and hard drugs also were assessed. Most types of drug use were significantly correlated with emotional distress and positive history of suicide attempt. A high frequency of alcohol use and inhalant use were associated with emotional distress and a positive history of suicide attempts. Hostility was most strongly correlated with drug use. It is suggested that hostility as well as moderate to high depression symptom levels be considered risk factors for drug use and suicidality in Latino adolescents. It is also recommended that emotional distress be explicitly addressed in the treatment of drug abuse and other problem behaviors in Latino adolescents.

摘要:
Considerable attention has focused on the role of family dysfunction in the development of adolescent substance abuse, particularly in families where a parent has a history of alcohol and drug abuse. This study examined parental reports of dissatisfaction with 41 boys (ages 10-12) of fathers with a history of substance abuse (SA+) and 68 boys of fathers without such a history (SA-). Higher dissatisfaction ratings by both mothers and fathers were found in the SASA+group in contrast to the SA-group. Both child externalizing behavior problems and parental personality characteristics were correlated with dissatisfaction. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that father's negative affectivity, followed by externalizing symptoms in the boys, were most predictive of dissatisfaction in both mothers and fathers. The implications of these results for an understanding of the adverse family context of substance abuse are discussed.

摘要:
This study examined the relationship between family factors and adolescents substance abuse by comparing the families of adolescents who do not abuse drugs or alcohol with the families of those who do. The subjects were 89 white adolescent males, with a mean age of 16 years, primarily from the rural areas of a Mid-Atlantic state. The relationship between each of the family dynamic factors (cohesion, adaptability, family strengths, family togetherness, parents' marital happiness, and parental drug and alcohol use) and adolescent substance abuse was significant at the .0005 level. Four of the fice structural variables also proved to be significantly related to adolescent substance abuse. The results of this study support and expand upon previous research indicating that adolescent drug and alcohol use is greatly affected by family factors and that adolescents who abstain from drug and alcohol use and abuse come from families who are qualitatively different from the families of adolescents who use and abuse substances.

摘要:
A number of drug prevention researchers have called for a more theoretical approach to program development and evaluation (e.g., MacKinnon, Weber, and Pentz, 1989). Modeling, an important aspect of social cognitive theory (Bandura, 1969, 1977a, 1986a), has accrued empirical support with a variety of populations and problems, and current state-of-the-art prevention programs are mostly social cognitive theory based. However, there are few publications which review specifically how modeling is applied to adolescent substance abuse prevention programs. This paper fills that gap by reviewing theoretical considerations for implementing modeling. A program of research aimed at simultaneously improving modeling in substance abuse prevention programs and providing an applied test of social cognitive theory is recommended.

摘要:
Screening data, including results of the Problem Oriented Screening Instrument for Teenagers (POSIT) developed by the NIDA, on arrested youths processed in May 1993 at the Hillsborough County, Florida Juvenile Assessment Center are analyzed. High rates of potential psychosocial functioning problems were obtained. Relationships were found between the youths' POSIT results, their dependency and delinquency referral histories, self-reported alcohol and marijuana/hashish use and their claimed involvement in mental health or substance use treatment-for which problems they were seriously underserved. The service delivery and policy implications of our findings are drawn.
