This qualitative and ethnographic research was based on structured interviews and treatment observation of 14 college students from severly chemically dependent, dysfunctional, and sexually abusive families (CDs). It describes the competitive forces that appear to produce role over-assimilation or sterotypy among CDs. Sexual abuse was found to be endemic in the CD subculture, having its roots in the competitive structure of the family. A counseling strategy was described that focused on helping CD students move through role developmental stages toward greater psychological separation.

Psychometric reliability of the Drug Use Screening Inventory (DUSI) was examined in 191 adolescents who qualified for a DSM-III-R diagnosis of Psychoactive Substance Use Disorder. Internal, split-half and test-retest reliability was found to be superior. Caucasian subjects exhibited more severe substance use problems than African-American subjects but did not differ in any other domain. Females reported more severe disturbances than males on health status, psychiatric disorder, social competence, family system and leisure/recreation compared to males but were less severely disrupted in work adjustment. These results suggest that the DUSI may be useful for identifyign and quantifying substance use and related problems.

This study examined the relationships between drug use and problems and the socio-economic status of the neighbourhoods in which students lived. Students in Grades 11 and 13 were asked for their postal code as socio-economic data are available for postal code areas. We found the largest number of alcohol and drug problems in areas with the lowest socio-economic characteristics. These areas were characterized by low cost substandard housing, and social and racial problems and delinquency.

Fifteen marijuana-dependent adolescent abusers (mean age = 16.9 years) were administered the full Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised. Subjects had no history of other substance or alcohol abuse or dependence, cerebral trauma, psychiatric or nerological disorders. They had been abstinent form marijuana for an average of 27 days, and the majority of them were given urine tests to verify their abstenence. Comparisons among intelligence and memory indices revealed serveral significant findings that are consistent with the pattern produced by cerebral dysfunction. Specifically, memory indices were significantly reduced in relation to both intellectual function and attentional ability. In contrast, intelligence was in the normal range and unchanged relative to the estimated premorbid level. This profile is a characteristic finding in patients who are recovering form chronic impairment of memory function.

In a survey of 75 male and female adolescent athletes only 14 % of the total sample reported to be non-drinkers. Twenty-one percent of the sample reported alcohol use within the week that the Adolesent Alcohol Involvement Scale was administered. The subjects of this descriptive study spent at least 20 hours a week participating in organized sports. Although more males reported alcohol use, female gymnasts appeared to have the highest percentage for alcohol use and misuse. Based on the data collected, alcohol use appears to be the hidden curriculum for the adolescent athlete.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the adolescent drug abuser's stated degree of motivation for treatment to treatment outcome, separately for clients admitted to inpatient treatment and for clients admitted to outpatient treatment. For both treatment groups, a significant, but only moderate, degree of association was found between stated degree of "importance of getting help and counseling" for drug and alcohol problems at admission, and the reduction of such problems at follow-up. The ratigns of importance of getting help for some types of life problems other than substance use/abuse problems also predicted, to a significant degree, a reduction in substance use/abuse at follow-up; but these types of problems were different for inpatients than for outpatients. An unexpected finding was that inpatients who rated getting help for employment as relatively more important for them, were fuond to reduce their substance use/abuse to a significantly lesser degree at follow-up.
