AbstractThe present study examined the effectiveness of an empirically based, psychoeducational, group treatment program for bulimia. The seven‐week program focused primarily on decreasing depression, enhancing self‐esteem, increasing assertion and improving body image. In addition, women monitored their own bingeing and purging. Relative to no treatment controls (N = 7), women who received treatment (N = 11) showed significant improvements in their number of binges per month, self‐esteem, and depression. Also, the number of purges per month tended to decrease. Women in both groups showed significant improvements in body image. The treatment gains were maintained at a ten‐week follow‐up. These results suggest that a short‐term group treatment approach that focuses on personality and behavioral deficits as well as the maladaptive eating pattern is an effective treatment strategy

AbstractEight bulimic females completed a 16‐week comprehensive behavioral treatment program consisting of three interventions: exposure with response prevention (ERP), training in energy balance (EB), and personal social problem solving (PSPS). Together the interventions contributed to a 89.9% average reduction in vomiting below the baseline level. AbstractThis paper presents data from a one‐year follow‐up of 37 normal‐weight bulimic patients who presented at an outpatient eating disorders clinic. Eating attitudes and behavior (EAT), social adjustment (SAS‐R), and psychological symptoms (Hopkins Symptoms Checklist) were assessed at evaluation and follow‐up. AbstractSeventeen women, between the ages of 18 and 26, with a chronic history of bingeing and purging on a daily basis were compared to sex‐matched control groups of the same age range and to “normal” reference values to assess their nutritional status. Anthropometric studies indicated the bulimics were 67% of standard for triceps skinfold thickness, demonstrating moderately depleted fat reserves. Five (29%)of the seventeen subjects were below the 5th percen‐ tile of triceps skinfold measurements. Somatic protein stores appeared to be adequate. The bulimics had significantly lowered serum globulin levels and total lymphocyte counts but increased serum transferrin and iron concentra‐ tions, compared to controls. There was a trend toward increased serum zinc and phosphorous and lowered white blood counts in the bulimic group. There was also a significantly decreasedpotassium value in the laxative abus‐ ers, but not the vomiter group. Vitamin supplementation did not appear to af‐ fect serum zinc, iron or transferrin status. The biochemical data of the bulimic group were still within “normal” ranges, despite some statistically significant differences from the control group. AbstractPrevalence of eating behaviors and components of three patterns—bulimia, restrained eating, night eating syndrome (NESI—are described in 232 normal weight adults. Some components of eating patterns occurred frequently fe.g., guilt about eating), but items suggesting pathology were rare (e.g., self‐in‐ duced vomiting). AbstractThe longitudinal and multidisciplinary study “Growth and Health of Teen‐ agers” was carried out in the Netherlands at two secondary schools. In this article the snacking habits of 13 1 girls and 102 boys of 12–17 years of age are reported as well as the nutrient values and the methods applied. For the whole age range about 20% of the total daily energy intake was supplied by snacks. Snacksprovided 10% of the protein intake, 18–29% of the fat intake, 25–30% of the total carbohydrate intake and about 10% of calcium and iron intake. AbstractDuring 1972‐77 a cardiovascular disease prevention program was carried out in Eastern Finland. At the end of the program a sample comprising 7 1,957 persons (5,829 men and 6,128 women), aged 25‐64 years, was examined. Among other questions concerning their health habits and related issues, they were also asked if they had attempted to reduce their weight. According to this information the subjects were divided into four categories: never; more than 6 months ago; 1‐6 months ago; and during the preceding month prior to the survey. Twenty‐two percent of all men and thirty‐eight percent of all women reported weight control attempts sometime in the past, approxi‐ mately half of them during the last 6 months. Weight reduction attempts were then studied in relationship to age, sex, Body Mass Index (BMI), smoking hab‐ its, hypertension, and presence of some cardiovascular disease. The results showed that women had more attempts at weight reduction than men. AbstractSeven eating disorder groups were assessed via a self‐adjustable light beam for levels of body image distortion at seven body sites. Groups were catego‐ rized on the basis of present weight, past history of lowest weight, and pur‐ gative activity. AbstractAnorexia Nervosa (A.N.) was diagnosed in a group of seven black and his‐ panic female adolescents, constituting 5% of the patients treated for this con‐ dition during a 12 year period at Children's Hospital National Medical Center (CHNMC). Although A.N. had existed for an average of one year, the correct diagnosis had been establishedprior to coming to CHNMC in only half of the patients. The characteristics of these patients as well as the course of their ill‐ ness are described and a hypothesis is developed relating to the emergence of A. N. among minorities.
