AbstractThe specific psychopathology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa is complex in form. Although for many purposes self‐report questionnaires are a satisfactory measure of this psychopathology, for detailed psychopathological studies and for investigations into the effects of treatment, more sensitive and flexible assessment measures are required. AbstractA new interview based clinical rating scale for use with eating disordered patients is described. Two preliminary studies of interrater reliability gave satisfactory results. The Clinical Eating Disorders Rating Instrument (CEDRI) is offered as a possible tool for both clinical and research use.

AbstractThere were 22 bulimic women who participated in a double‐blind placebo‐controlled study of the effects' of imipramine hydrochloride in the treatment of bulimia over a 16 week period. Particpants receiving the active drug demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in purging (frequency of self‐induced vomiting plus the use of laxatives) at both the 6 and 16 week assessment periods. Depression was reduced to a significantly greater extent in those receiving the active drug at 6 weeks but not at the 16 week assessment. These findings, from the longest duration medication study in this condition, suggest that imipramine is an effective treatment for bulimia. However, only one‐third of the participants receiving imipramine had stopped purging by the end of the study. Thus, clinicians may need to add other approaches, such as cognitive‐behavioral treatment, to the management of this

AbstractThere were 53 women (35 bulimics and 18 normal controls) who were compared on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality inventory, the Symptom Checklist‐90R, and the Beck Depression Inventory. The bulimics were separated into two groups, high (N = 18) and low (N = 17) frequency purgers, based upon a median split self‐monitored purging data. Bulimics who purged less than 3 times per week (M = 1.71) were classified as low frequency purgers, and those who purged more than 3 times per week (M = 9.94) were classified as high frequency purgers. Comparisons of the three groups showed that both groups of bulimics differed from normals on measures of depression, but on other measres, i. e., anxiety interpersonal sensitivity and sociopathic trait, only the high frequency purgers differed from normals. Correlational analyses indicated that these same variables, and especially depression, were positively correlated with purging, suggesting that severity of bulimia may be associated with additional psychopathology. AbstractThe effect of intracellular glucopenia induced by 2‐deoxy‐D‐glucose (2‐DG) on changes in hunger ratings, blood glucose, plasms cortisol, and prolactin levels were examined in six female patients with primary anorexia nervosa, three patients with bulimia nervosa, and six age‐and sex‐matched volunteers. In the normal subjects, hunger ratings obtained by the linear visual analog technique increased significantly at 60 minutes after 2‐DG infusion and remained elevated. In Patients with anorexia nervosa, however, hunger ratins paradoxically decreased significantly at 90 minutes. In normal subjects, the ingestion of a 20‐minute lunch relieved hunger, but neither the anorexic patients nor bulimic patients felt satiety even after food intake. AbstractThe current research investigated the incidence and severity of bulimiclike behaviors over time in 159 women who were college freshmen in 1965. The results indicate that significantly more women are engaging in bulimic‐like behaviors today than they did in their high school and college years, and that the frequency with which they engage in disordered eating and extreme weight control practices is increasing. AbstractEvaluation of some of the physical variables recorded during an intake of patients into the Macquarie University Weight Control Program is reported. Measures from 43 females aged between 19 and 66 years were taken prior to therapy and 15 weeks later. All subjects lost weight, the range being from 1 to 19 kg, and significant reductions on 14 anthropometric recordings were found. Factor analysis on the reductions suggested that five factors accounted for the variance. These were called general weight loss, torso, limbs, skinfold, and thigh factors. Suggestions are made to reduce the amount of anthropometry in future sessons in the interests of economy of time.

AbstractThis study aimed at describing parental emotions and experiences mainly related to the feeding situation during infancy. Two groups were compared, one group of families (n = 42) with infants exhibiting severe feeding problems, and a matched control group without such problems. Subjective maternal reports were obtained in a structured interview covering aspects such as child behavior at mealtimes, amount of problem experience, maternal emotions, and social relations as well as facts about the feeding situation (frequency of feeds, length of meal, period of breastfeeding, etc). In the large majority of comparisons, there were significant group differences, with problem parents reporting more negative experiences and emotions, more social isolation, and more irritable child behavior coupled to more prolonged and frequent feedings. The feeding difficulties appeared to have influenced the total situation in the problem families. It was concluded that such negative experiences could not be regarded as “normal” stress reactions following the birth of a child.
