摘要:
Circularly polarized light has been found in a peculiar white dwarf star; the result suggests that its magnetic field is between 10 million and 100 million gauss, a value to be expected on theoretical grounds. Further observations show that with increasing wavelength the percentage circular polarization rises in the ultraviolet, drops somewhat and then rises sharply again in the infrared at 12 000 Å. There is also a linear polarization, which is present in the uv, disappears at about 6000 Å, then reappears at about 8000 Å perpendicular to the first direction.

摘要:
Astronomy, a field for which few have claimed relevance, is now becoming relevant to a pressing problem, atmospheric pollution. It turns out that those pesky atmospheric contaminants that have been annoying astronomers looking at the sun and other stars, have been leaving tell‐tale lines on spectra, which can be measured to infer their presence and strength. Serendipitously, for decades observatories throughout the world have been collecting plates from which such pollution data can be inferred, which can now be used to establish trends, either regionally or globally.

摘要:
First neutrino event in a hydrogen bubble chamber was found on Friday the13th of November on film taken with the Argonne 12-foot chamber. A neutrinocoming from the left interacted with a proton to produce the three-prongedevent consisting of μ−(longest track), a proton (shortest track) and a&pgr;+. Neutrino-proton interactions had previously been observed in a propanechamber at CERN, but not in a hydrogen chamber. Both Argonne and Brookhaven, which has a 7-foot chamber, are preparingto start long runs to measure neutrino-nucleon interactions. Neither deviceis completely shaken down yet, though. Argonne will have neutrino beams of0.5-1.5 GeV/c, and Brookhaven will have one that peaks at 2-3 GeV/c.The Argonne chamber will continue to run with hydrogen during an initial exposureof about 500 000 pictures. Based on the success of this running, thechamber will then be scheduled for a deuterium filling and an additional onemillion pictures. This later run will study the axial vector form factor in theweak interaction, as will the Brookhaven run, which will start with 300 000pictures in deuterium; 700 000 pictures more are proposed for a later run.

摘要:
More papers are scheduled for the joint American Physical Society—American Association of Physics Teachers meeting in New York this year than for each of the two previous meetings. The meeting, to be held 1–4 February at the New York Hilton, will probably be better attended than its organizers originally expected; if the number of contributed papers is any guide to attendance, then cuts in funds will probably not keep as many physicists from participating as was earlier believed. According to William W. Havens Jr, executive secretary of the APS, a rush of contributed‐paper abstracts descended on the APS office at the deadline date.
