摘要:
Conventional laser cavities contain huge numbers of atoms and photons, each contributing to the radiation field by stimulated emission. The effect of an individual photon on the dynamics of such a system is negligible. But if reduced to its bare essentials, a laser would become a pumped single atom that interacts with a single electromagnetic mode in a cavity. In so minimal a system, quantum fluctuations on the scale of single photons can become dominant and the usually familiar behavior of a laser can become very unfamiliar.

Xishuang Banna, a semitropical prefecture located in the south of China near the borders with Laos and Myanmar, is known in China as the “home of the peacock.” Visitors might return home with local fruits, combs made from water buffalo horns, or peacock feathers, such as the one shown in figure 1.

At the start of the fifth century AD, Copa´n was a modest village set in a fertile, mountainous valley on the eastern fringe of the Maya world. Within decades, the village embarked on a remarkable rise to become, at its zenith in the eighth century, among the most accomplished Maya cities in art, architecture, and astronomy.

NASA announced in November that it will undertake an environmental impact statement (EIS) for its $50 million outrigger project, which would add several 1.8‐meter telescopes to the twin 10‐meter telescopes at the W. M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The move goes beyond what a federal judge had ordered last July and raises hopes that antagonism will begin to thaw between the astronomy community and Native Hawaiians and environmentalists who oppose further developments on the island mountain.

With a level of fanfare that signaled a significant commitment by the Bush administration to basic science research, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham used a packed National Press Club luncheon on 10 November to unveil the Department of Energy's priority list for developing 28 major science facilities over the next two decades. The list, based on recommendations from six advisory panels, was finalized by Office of Science Director Raymond Orbach.
