摘要:
It is generally agreed that neutron stars or pulsars have enormous magnetic fields at their surface—in the range1012–1013gauss. Mal Ruderman of Columbia University has considered (Phys. Rev. Lett.27, 1306, 1971) what happens to ordinary matter in such fields. He concludes that the surface of the neutron star is not a gas but condensed matter arranged in whiskers of atoms. “Neutron stars have hair,” he explains.

摘要:
Xenon ions have been accelerated to 7 MeV/nucleon or a total energy of 925 MeV, an energy sufficient to surmount the Coulomb barrier in any known nucleus. The xenon ions, withZof 54, are expected to be very effective in the attempt to make supertransuranic elements near the island of stability.

摘要:
The National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center at Cornell, which runs the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, is planning a series of improvements in the radio‐telescope radar system which, according to director Frank Drake, are expected to raise its sensitivity by a factor of 2000. Drake said that the upgrading program will enable the center to make radar maps of Venus with a resolution of about 1 km—comparable to the best currently‐available earth‐based maps of the moon—and to map Mercury, Mars and the major satellites of Jupiter.

摘要:
When symmetries are present the solution of almost any physical problem is simplified, because we can get at the properties of a system without completely solving all the equations that describe the system. In high‐energy physics, symmetry principles have been studied with an eye to circumventing two obstacles to the understanding of elementary particles: lack of precise knowledge about interparticle forces (with the exception of electromagnetism) and the mathematical intractability of any realistic models that propose to explain observed particle phenomena.

摘要:
Although electron energy spectra have been studied for years, only more recently has their usefulness in chemical‐structure problems been appreciated. Now we appear to have a new analytic method that can describe the complete electronic structure of a molecule by measuring binding energies for all the orbitals. Optical spectroscopy, in comparison, measures only the first ionization potentials, except for the very simplest molecules. And electron emission spectra, we shall see, are also useful in such applied work as protein structure analysis and investigations of environmental pollutants.

摘要:
This year the joint annual meeting of The American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers will be in San Francisco for the first time. What will be special about this meeting other than its location? This is the first year that the new APS Forum on Physics and Society has participated; three symposia have been arranged by the group. Energy sources and production will be the topic at two other related sessions. And two sessions, one organized by AAPT and the other by APS, will deal with alternative directions for physics education.

摘要:
November 1971, page 37—The figure illustrating estimated radiation doses in Joseph Lieberman's article was credited to the Division of Criteria and Standards, Office of Radiation Programs of the Environmental Protection Agency. Lieberman tells us that the data presented there should be attributed to an interagency special‐studies group working with the Criteria and Standards division; the participating agencies were the Department of Defense, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the Atomic Energy Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency. Their final report is due to be issued in June.
