摘要:
Three American physicists, John Bardeen, Walter H. Brattain, and William Shockley, were honored last month in Stockholm, where they were jointly awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for “their investigations on semiconductors and the discovery of the transistor effect”. Each of the three winners of the prize received a gold medal, a diploma, and a share of the $38 633 award. Ceremonies to mark the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, Swedish inventor of dynamite under whose will the Nobel fund was established, were held on December 10th by the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences in the concert hall at Stockholm. The presentations were made by King Gustaf Adolph of Sweden before an assembly of some 2000 persons. It was the first time that three physicists received jointly a single Nobel Prize since 1903, when the physics award was shared by Henri Becquerel and Pierre and Marie Curie.

摘要:
When the AIP moves into its new location next summer, physicists will have in New York a service headquarters of which they can be proud. Although strict economy is necessarily being observed in the process of converting the manufacturing building which has been bought, the result will be an excellent, functional office. Everything inside its four walls will be modern and designed for efficient operation. There will be new flooring, walls, partitions, ceilings, lighting, heating, and ventilating. There will be a modern passenger elevator, a modest but attractive reception room, and a Board Room available for the use of physicists' committees. The fac¸ade will be dressed up just a little bit, as compared with its present “factory” appearance, to make it worthy of the physicists' organizational headquarters.

摘要:
Anyone who doubts the serious concern of the scientific community about the state of the teaching of mathematics and science in the secondary schools will be reassured, even if not completely comforted, by viewing a list of the activities now being carried forward by professional societies. A recent summary, issued by the Science Teaching Improvement Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, includes reports of such activities by 24 distinct and separate groups during the past six months. Any review of the growing literature on the subject indicates that physicists have been much slower in coming to grips with this nationally important problem than have their colleagues in chemistry, in mathematics, and in related fields. Although we cannot yet be proud of our record, the last two years have been marked by growing interest on the part of physicists in general and of the American Institute of Physics and its member societies in particular.

摘要:
Research in modern physics has had for engineering a double impact: on the one hand dramatic and public, yet apparently remote; on the other diffuse and specialized, a process of infiltration from pure science. In engineering neither salient has quite been recognized for what it was.

摘要:
A summer Institute for Cooperative Emulsion Research was jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the University of Chicago during the months of July and August, 1956. The work of the Institute was made possible through the great encouragement which we have received from the National Science Foundation and the authorities of our own University. It was of particular importance in this connection that the Nuclear Physics Branch of the Office of Naval Research, Washington, D.C., gave full support to the program of the Summer Institute and that we received permission to use microscopes and other equipment owned by the US Navy.
