The Knox and Mantel procedures of time-space disease clustering are shown to be nonrobust in certain situations. The effect of selecting the necessary constants by a trial-and-error approach drastically alters the nominal significance level. When the population is shifting over time or when the detection rate of the disease is not constant, this artificially induced space-time clustering can increase the probability of rejection to two or more times the nominal significance level.

A model for mixed continuous and discrete variables suggested by Chang and Afifi (1974) and Krzanowski (1975) is used to explore the bias in the discriminant function (DF) approach to estimation of the coefficients in the multiple1ogistic regression model. When the data come from this mixed variable model the DF estimator of the coefficients of the continuous variables are asymptotically unbiased. The DF estimator of the intercept and coefficients for the discrete variables may be severely biased. The magnitude of the bias is shown to depend in a systematic way on the true value of the coefficients and the underlying probabilities of the out-come of discrete variables. The implications for analysis are discussed.

The problems of estimation and hypothesis testing are discussed for the parameters of the simple linear model with replications in the presence of heterogeneous variances. It is argued that guidelines for choosing between ordinary least squares or weighted squares procedures with estimated weights should be partially based on a measure of the severity of the variance heterogeneity. Furthermore, Monte Carlo results are used to provide such guidelines. Several procedures fortesting the general linear hypothesis are compared, with the ordinary least squares procedures demonstrating a surprising degree of robustness with respect to their power and distributional properties. A modified test which accounts for the presence of variance heterogeneity is proposed, and is found to be less powerful than the ordinary least squares test in many cases.

A popular algorithm for reparameterizing linear models is that which defines effects due to the levels of each factor as adding to zero. When models with interactions are being used with data that have empty cells, certain statistical computer packages use this algorithm incorrectly. This wrong use of the algorithm is described and illustrated.

For the purpose of constructing t-designs (a special family of incomplete block designs) from a given design, a trade off method has been introduced and studied [Hedayat and Li (1979)]. In this paper, we present a computer algorithm for generating a basis of the trades on t-designs utilizing the results of Graham, Li and Li (1980).
