A patient with a persistent paresis of accommodation is compared in a series of tests with a subject who has normal accommodation. The results indicate that while the subject with paresis can, given time, display a normal static response to a given accommodative stimulus, she shows a marked dynamic weakness of accommodation in her inability to track a moving target and to sustain a given response.

The intra-ocular pressure was measured on 100 eyes with the Tonomat. That value was compared with the radius of curvature for these eyes and a statistically significant relationship was found. With larger radius of curvature the IOP was found to be greater on the average and vice-versa. Hence it is suggested that corneal curvature be taken into consideration when using this tonometer.

A method for measuring visual refractive defects using a gas laser is presented here. The different parameters to be determined, lens spherical power, cylindrical power and cylindrical axis orientation, are determined by means of three measurements and the use of a few nomograms. This technique is of general applicability whenever a spherocylindrical optical surface is to be measured.

The corneal thickness of twenty-two male subjects was measured before and after wearing a hard and flexible contact lens on one eye. A significant corneal thickness change was found on the eye wearing the contact lens and especially during the hard contact lens session. The contralateral eye not wearing the contact lens did show less variation during the hard contact lens session and not significant variation during the flexible session. The variations of corneal thickness could be attributed to an osmolarity effect, a decrease in glycogen content of the cornea or a significant decrease of transcorneal potential.

The Mackay-Marg electronic tonometer is generally regarded as an applanation tonometer of high clinical accuracy and has been used for obtaining correlations with other tonometers on a number of occasions. Concerning the correlation between the Mackay-Marg tonometer and the recently introduced Non-Contact-Tonometer (NCT) no results have yet been published. In this study 58 patients had their eyes measured by both NCT and Mackay-Marg tonometry. All the measurements were performed without the use of anesthesia. A close relationship between the readings from the two tonometers was found. Pearson's coefficient of correlation is +0.87, which suggests that the NCT is accurately assessing the same function as the Mackay-Marg tonometer, i.e. the IOP. The mean of the Mackay-Marg readings was 18.48 and the standard deviation 3.52, and that of the NCT was 17.38 and the S.D. 3.84. The criteria for reference seem to be similar in NCT and Mackay-Marg Tonometry.

Fifty readings were taken with the non-contact tonometer on 16 men with normal IOP. There was a decrease in IOP on successive measurements of about 1 mm Hg. The median of any three successive readings was always within ± 2 mm Hg of the average of all 50 measurements.

From this case study the author infers that while the minus-power Bausch & Lomb SoflensTMdoes not correct for corneal astigmatism, its high-plus series counterpart may, due to greater rigidity from increased central thickness. Further research is suggested.

A patient with aniseikonia and emmetropia is discussed. Occlusion was used as a method of differentiating between aniseikonia and other types of ocular anomaly. A method of identifying iseikonic corrections is presented which could make such identification easier.

Using five wearers of the Bausch and Lomb SoflensTMas subjects, keratometer readings were taken in the morning prior to wearing lenses and at regular intervals throughout the day. Mean horizontal curvature varied less than 0.25 D throughout the diurnal period and the mean vertical curvature varied only slightly more than 0.25 D.The results of this study make it appear that there is considerably less diurnal change in corneal curvature for wearers of the SoflensTMthan for conventional hard contact lens wearers.
