摘要:
ABSTRACT:While much has been written about the practice roles of remote area nurses in Australia, less is known about the role and function of the rural nurse. The majority of rural nurses practise in rural hospitals, community health settings and nursing homes. In contrast, the remote area nurses work setting is generally involved with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care services. Rural nurses' practice setting is usually located in a larger organisation than that of the remote area nurse. There is usually at least one medical practitioner in the town or on‐call close by. Nurses who are employed in the smaller rural hospitals have what has been described as a ‘specialist generalist’ role. This means that they are required to be multi‐skilled and competent in a wide range of nursing and non‐nursing practice. In contrast, nurses who work in base/provincial hospitals, may have either a generalist or specialist role. This paper provides a summary of the literature on Australian rural nurses and develops some of the themes containe

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Iron deficiency anaemia is a common condition in rural Aboriginal children. Poor nutrition and helminth infections are the common causes of this morbidity. This study aims to evaluate the impact of annual single dose mebendazole 300–500 mg (albendazole unavailable) in preventing anaemia and the impact of iron and mebendazole in treating anaemia in a population of remote Aboriginal children in Arnhemlan

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This paper describes a highly successful pilot program of four audio‐teleconferences that was offered in 1993 to optometrists based in rural and regional areas of Queensland. The program represents the first application of such technology for this purpose, either within Australia or overseas. It accessed the facilities of eight of a network of 38 open learning centres across Queensland and comprised an integrated package of three workshops, each of 3 hours duration, covering issues relating to the eye disease, glaucoma, and a stand‐alone workshop covering general practice/legal issues. A ‘complex directed conference model’ of audio‐teleconferencing was used, with each workshop incorporating a slide presentation and companion workbook that described individual pre‐workshop preparatory activities and was structured to provide a focus for group discussions during the workshop. The program demonstrated audio‐teleconferencing to be both a cost‐ and educationally‐effective medium for the delivery of continuing education to a widely dis

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Sport injuries are a common yet an unwanted aspect of participation in sports. Previous studies have indicated disparities between urban and rural injury patterns. This study examines sport injuries specifically. Although similar in many features, there were major variations in the patterns of rural and urban sports injuries. Rural injuries appeared to revolve around football codes while the urban pattern reflected involvement in a wider variety of sport. The results confirm that injury data can be used to determine specific priorities within different communities. Consequently local data are seen as imperative to initiate appropriate preventive action in rural areas.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Remote rural districts of Australia can continue to expect a loss of public services due to the low population density and migration loss. However allied health services such as physiotherapy, are cost‐effective services that are in demand in remote Australia. This paper was derived from a report to the Rural Health Policy Unit of Queensland Health that granted funds for a mobile allied health team to visit the remote western shires of the Peninsula and Torres Strait health region. By presenting an outline of an unusual group of parochial occupational injuries it can be shown that there is indeed both a considerable demand for allied health services and these services can be provided to remote communities by a mobile remote outreach service for a reasonable cos

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This paper describes the approach taken at the University of Queensland to broaden the scope of curriculum design to involve rural general practitioners, medical students and rural health care consumers. A form of nominal group process in serial telephone teleconferences was used, with a group of rural general practitioners, to develop and pilot curriculum content, learning strategies and assessment methods. Medical students assisted in the evaluation of the curriculum and representatives of rural organisations were consulted about the value of hosting medical students in rural communities. The three groups made significant contributions to the project. The results will be trialed for the entire year 6 cohort (240 students) in 1995 and will form the basis of the planned rural practice term in the new graduate course.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Details of the process used by the authors, as curriculum design consultants, for the Rural Medicine Curriculum Design Project are presented. The process resulted in separate curricula in surgery, anaesthesia and obstetrics for use in advanced training within the Rural Training Program of the Faculty of Rural Medicine of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Key features of the design process are synthesized as a guide to projects where agreement across divergent groups is essential.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:The National Mental Health Strategy aims to assist people with a mental illness to have access to improved services and support, with community based services as the option of first choice. The Commonwealth, State and Territory governments are working together with consumers, professionals and other key parties so that mental health services are ‘mainstreamed’ within the general health system. This will also ensure that permanent improvements are made in the way Australia responds to the needs of people with mental disorders. Access to an integrated network of different services, including those outside the health system, is an essential component of the strategy. Ensuring that residents of rural and remote areas have adequate access to mental health services is apriority of the Strat
