摘要:
ABSTRACT:In 1991, the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) made a successful application for a seeding grant for a project entitled ‘An intensive course in applied pharmacology for nurses working in rural settings’. Funding was provided under the Rural Health Support, Education and Training (RHSET) program, and was used to conduct a pilot course in pharmacology and drug information for nurses at the North West Nurse Education Centre, Whyalla, South Australia, during August/September 1991. A total of 40 nurses attended the course and were provided with course materials which contained background information on the topics to be discussed during a two‐day seminar. In a subsequent mailing to 320 nurses currently practising in the rural south‐east region of South Australia, interest levels in a similar seminar proposed for Mount Gambier were canvassed. Keen interest was expressed by nurses working in a variety of country centres in the region, and a formal offer of complimentary use of teaching facilities in the Mount Gambier Hospital was received. A second course was conducted during July 1992, and attracted over 40 nurses from a variety of practice backgrounds. SHPA was able to conduct both courses using considerably less funding than allocated under the original budget of the RHSET grant for the initial project.A statistically significant improvement in participants' pharmacology and drug information knowledge was demonstrated using a multiple choice assessment prior to, and immediately after the

摘要:
ABSTRACT:In recent years econometric models used in health service planning have tended to encourage the downgrading or closure of small rural hospitals with the effect of reducing access to services and transferring costs from health authorities to consumers. These changes have occurred despite mounting evidence that people in rural communities have specific health service needs which require special attention. This study aimed to identify the perceptions of community members, health professionals and administrators regarding the health service needs in their small rural communities as a basis for developing a more comprehensive model of rural health service planning. Focus groups were held in three selected towns in Gippsland, exploring participants' perceptions of the meaning of health, health service needs, impact of health services, and the best set‐up for health services. Consistent with previous research, key findings include: a broad conceptualisation of health; the perceived overwhelming importance of doctors, hospitals and chemists; the economic and social importance of a rural hospital; and a preference for all health services being provided under the one roof, funding and program flexibility, and local involvement in health service planning and implementatio

ABSTRACT:The perceived limited use of extended training by the majority of registered nurses (RNs) employed in a42‐bed rural, but not remote, hospital with an established program of advanced training for RNs, was the motivation to conduct a formal study into their use. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in terms of utilisation, financial benefits, professional appropriateness and structural efficienc

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This paper consists of the late Professor Fred Hollows' responses to questions concerning the provision of specialist services to remote communities. In December 1991, Professor Hollows was invited to meet with a Research Advisory Committee assisting me as I gathered and analysed data concerning the provision of specialist services. Throughout the interview he emphasised three criteria essential for the provision of effective specialist services, namely: credible and competent service providers, regular services, and good liaison and communication with the local community. In addition, he spoke about the role of the specialist in upgrading the skills of general practitioners and the need for medical audits to assess the extent to which local primary care practitioners are able to accurately identify illnesses requiring specialist attention. Finally, Professor Hollows made comment on the importance of empowering local health professionals, specialists and generalists, through skill and knowledge enhancement so that they are able to advocate on behalf of their constituencies.
