摘要:
Serious damage is caused in natural tropical forests and plantations, to standing trees, during extraction, transportation and production operations, and to forest products, by insect pests. The principal decision-makers involved in planning the relevant research programmes are the forest manager and the entomologist. Mutual respect between them is essential for efficient planning and research. Economic aspects have been largely neglected by entomologists who are somewhat sceptical of their value in the context of their research. Despite this there is little doubt that economic criteria will be utilised increasingly in evaluating research.

摘要:
An attempt has been made to trace the history ofAnastrephaspp. in Jamaica. The review covers the taxonomy ofAnastrephaspp., the host-preferences, the stage or stages of host-fruits attacked, the effects of the fruit's skin thickness on oviposition, the intensity of pest attack of mangoes, seasonal variations in intensity of fruitfly attack, and control.

摘要:
Sorghum is an important food crop in Uganda; in some areas it is the staple food grain. Low yields of sorghum are attributed to damage caused by insects, particularly the sorghum shoot fly, and to the weather. Chemical and cultural control measures against sorghum shoot fly in Uganda have given erratic results. It is postulated that these erratic results and unpredictable shoot fly behaviour observed by other workers are due to the presence of at least five species ofAtherigona.

摘要:
Four techniques currently used in India for the application of insecticides to control soil inhabiting pests are discussed. Pesticide can be applied to the soil before, during and after planting is carried out. The most common insecticides used are chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is suggested that parasites and predators are not killed and that insecticide resistance will not develop as quickly as with foliar applications. The treatment of seeds and propagating material with fungicides is a popular practice in India and the use of insecticides in this way is expected to increase. Root or seedling dipping of rice has been done and gives protection against stem borer, caseworm, jassids and aphids. The treatment of irrigation water with insecticides for the control of termites,Holotrichia, cutworms and Gryllidae is described. Residue and phytotoxicity problems are discussed. In India the problem of soil pollution by insecticides has not developed and is not expected to appear while the current normal insecticide rates are used.

摘要:
The paper reviews much of the literature relating to the major bacterial, viral and fungal diseases of cassava and presents this together with additional information gained by the authors. The importance of these diseases in reducing yields of this important source of carbohydrate is stressed. However, while much information is presented on symptoms and nature of the pathogens, little data is available on control measures. The authors emphasise the need for more active research, in particular into identifying and describing sources of disease resistance and into other simple means of disease control.

摘要:
Alternaria blight (Alternaria triticinaPrasada and Prabhu) of wheat was first recorded in India in 1924 and has recently achieved prominence due to the susceptibility of Mexican wheats to the fungus. The symptoms of the disease and the conditions under which the plants are most susceptible are described. The disease may be controlled by hot water seed treatment, the use of fungicides, or the development of resistant wheat varieties.

摘要:
The perennial sedgeScirpus maritimusposes serious weed problems in flooded rice fields in the Philippines and other Asian countries. A number of chemicals seemed highly promising for controlling this perennial sedge in trials at the International Rice Research Institute and in farmers' fields in the Cagayan Valley, Philippines. Excellent control was obtained when butachlor was applied pre-emergence, followed by MCPP post-emergence. The selective chemicals bentazon and fenoprop gave outstanding perennial sedge control in both transplanted and broadcest flooded rice.
