AbstractIt is known that dichloroethylamines in which the two chloroethyl groups are bound to different N atoms at a given distance from each other retain their activity and considerably lower their toxicity. It was assumed that by controlling the distance between the two chloroethyl substituents to the polymer chain a product of analogous action could be obtained. Two possibilities of binding monochloroethylamine (MCA) to a polymer were investigated: (1) Copolymerization ofN‐vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) with monochloroethylamide of methacrylic acid (MCAMA). The constants of copolymerization of this pair:r1= 3.88 ± 0.31 andr2= 0.089 ± 0.017 were determined, as well as the mean length of the elementary link of the copolymer chain. It was found that at a ratio of VP:MCAMA = 1:3 a copolymer of statistically probable structure could be obtained in which the distance between two monochloroethylamine groups is the most appropriate: about 6 atoms. (2) A polymer‐analogous reaction of the copolymer of VP with maleic anhydride (MA) permitting the binding of MCA to the polymer chain by severing the MA ring. It was established that the reaction proceeded best in a medium of dimethylformamide at 80°C for 1 hr. Water‐soluble products characterized by their C1 content and ir spectra were obtained. AbstractComplex formation in poly(vinylpyrrolidone)‐poly(itaconic acid monomethylester) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone)‐copolymer of maleic anhydride and monomethylitaconate systems has been investigated. It is shown that the interpolymer complexes are formed at interaction of macromolecular components. Data of conductometric, potentiometric, and viscometric titrations indicate that the molar composition of complexes is PVP:PMMI = 1:1 and PVP:MA/ MMI = 3:2. The complex particles are very compact with the intrinsic viscosity in water about 0.05‐0.10 dl/g not depending upon the molecular weight of polymer components. AbstractPolymeric amine (Ia) was prepared by reacting a copolymer ofN‐(2‐hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA) andN‐methacryloyl ρ‐aminocaproyl L‐leucinep‐nitrophenyl ester with 1,6‐diaminohexane in excess. The rate of reaction of (Ia) with reactive copolymers of HPMA andp‐nitrophenyl esters of methacryloylated amino acids was investigated. AbstractResults are reported obtained by the ESR study of the mobility of spin labels bonded at the side‐chain ends of copolymers of the polymethacrylamide type. The correlation times, γ, characterizing the mobility of the spin label were determined by analyzing the EPR spectra of 1% methanolic solutions of copolymers. The log γ vs 1/Tdependences within the temperature interval 233‐313 K studied are linear and are characterized by the same activation energy,Ea= 3 kcal/mole (12.5 kJ/mole), for both types of the side chains. AbstractRat liver β‐D‐glucuronidase was inhibitedin vitroby a 1% concentration of dextran and polyvinylpyrrolidone at low enzyme concentrations. Pentosan polysulphate showed a similar effect, while three derivatives of the polyaspartamide were inactive. Microsomal aniline hydroxylase was inhibited by a 0.75% concentration of all polymers tested, the most active being the lysine derivative of polyaspartamide. No effect on the cytochrome P‐450 ‐ carbon monoxide reaction was detected. Microsomal aminopyrine demethylase activity was only slightly depressed by polymers, except for pentosan polysulphate, which showed stimulation. AbstractGiven certain peculiarities of polysaccharides in comparison to synthetic polymers, a survey is made of the application of polysaccharides in the field of nutrition for calory‐reduced food, in pharmacy, and as auxiliary products in surgery, stressing to some extent recent results of the authors in cellulose and starch chemistry. In dealing with nutritional uses in calory‐reduced food, the problem of persorption of cellulose powders is discussed as well as properties and uses of recently developed starch products obtained by partial hydrolysis. In reviewing pharmaceutical uses of polysaccharides, we mention the active therapeutic effects of these substances, with detailed emphasis on the application of starch and cellulose products as carrier compounds. A survey of polysaccharide products as surgical auxiliaries is centered on their application as plasma expanders, as internal surgical dressings, and as external aids (glove powders). Finally, the need for further progress in polysaccharide chemistry is stressed as a prerequisite for finding and realizing new applications in restoring human hea
