SUMMARY600 patients have undergone posthetic valve replacement using the Bjork‐Shiley valve at A.I.I.M.S. between October, 1974 and June, 1983. In 400 patients cine fluororadiography has been performed and the opening angle of the disc was measured in all these cases by the method described by Venkataramanet alin 1980. Of the 400 patients, 88 had follow‐up of less than 6 months, and the rest between 6 months and 72 months. Thrombosis of the prosthetic valve was diagnosed by plain cine only in 11 cases and all cases showed restriction of movement with an opening angle less than 40° or no movement at all. All 11 cases were re‐operated and thrombectomy only was done. SUMMARYA prospective study of P.T.C. using the Chiba Needle in the diagnosis of cholestasis was carried out in 276 patients. The visualization of the biliary system by P.T.C. and the pathological diagnoses were confirmed in 253 patients. The accuracy of P.T.C. in the determination of the level and cause of cholestasis was 100.0% and 96.0% respectively. P.T.C, in our opinion, is still the diagnostic modality of choice, especially in surgically difficult patients.

ABSTRACTPercutaneous aspiration and drainage is increasingly being used in the diagnosis and management of surgical complications.The purpose of this study was to determine the natural history of right upper quadrant collections in cholecystectomy patients. Twenty‐seven consecutive patients undergoing cholecystectomy were examined ultrasonically. Collections in the subphrenic space, gallbladder fossa or wound were specifically sought. All patients had conventional T‐tube and wound drainage post‐operatively.Six collections were seen at the initial examination performed at a mean time of 6 days after surgery. Nineteen patients were re‐examined at a mean of 12.6 days post‐operatively and three of the collections seen initially had resolved, but 3 patients had developed new abnormalities.By 30 days, all collections had resolved except for one patient with a large subphrenic collection which required surgical drainage.It is concluded that collections are relatively common post‐cholecystectomy and most resolve sp

ABSTRACTA 64 year old woman presenting with bleeding esophageal varices had a well circumscribed 5 cm diameter carcinoid tumor originating in the common bile duct, demonstrated by angiography, computerised tomography (CT) and ultrasonography, and this was surgically excised. This is the third case of common bile duct carcinoid tumor reported in the literature1,2and the first to be demonstrated by angiography, CT and ultrasonography.

ABSTRACTA review of the casenotes and imaging investigations of 30 patients with neuroblastoma presenting to the Adelaide Children's Hospital over a 12 year period between 1970 and 1982 was carried out.The aims of imaging are presented.The changing patterns of imaging of neuroblastoma over the period have been discussed. In essence, there has been a major shift in imaging emphasis to computerised tomography and ultrasonography. Angiography and intravenous urography now have little or no place in a modern imaging protocol for neuroblastoma.Bone scintigraphy is a mandatory investigation for the exclusion of skeletal metastases. Bone marrow biopsy is. performed routinely.A protocol for the imaging of malignant neuroblastoma has been suggested.
