摘要:
Victims of major blunt trauma suffer chest injuries that can involve lungs and pleura, skeleton, heart, great vessels such as the aorta and pulmonary veins, bronchus, trachea, and diaphragm. Injuries can range from a fractured rib to an aortic disruption demanding rapid assessment and management of a life-threatening condition. The importance of a primary assessment is discussed with emphasis on the ABCs of airway, breathing, and circulation as they relate to specific blunt chest trauma.

摘要:
Chest trauma can be classified as a blunt or penetrating thoracic injury. Penetrating chest wounds, which break the skin, are caused by bullets and knives. Thus, the seriousness and extent of internal injuries cannot be assessed by the appearance of the wound due to the direct and indirect injury caused by the weapon. Some of the diagnoses and aspects of treatment of penetrating chest trauma are discussed.

摘要:
Care of the patient experiencing acute myocardial ischemia or infarction requires rapid, accurate decision-making and treatment to preserve cardiac function. Successful treatment of cardiac ischemia requires ECG evaluation, arrythmia management, cardiac enzyme analysis, appropriate oxygen and drug administration, and reperfusion.

摘要:
With all the advances in medical and surgical treatments, valvular heart disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The history of valvular surgery and the anatomy and symptoms of valvular dysfunction are discussed. Early diagnosis is the key to better outcomes.

摘要:
This article will discuss the different types of traumatic and emergent disruptions of the aorta. It will discuss the important roles that the perioperative and postoperative nurse has in planning and caring for the patient with an aortic disruption, along with the team approach to care that must be undertaken. Surgical intervention will differ in the care of the patient with ascending, descending, or abdominal types of aortic disruption. Traumatic disruptions of the aorta are emergent cases that emergency department staff need to be prepared for at a moment's notice.

摘要:
Because esophageal and paraesophageal injuries can be life-threatening conditions, early diagnosis and aggressive management are required to improve patient survival. An overview is provided and the pathophysiology, mechanisms of injury, and therapeutic interventions as they relate to these specific injuries are discussed.
