Anticipating the inevitable, the Ottawa‐Carleton regional municipality has made provisions for a supply – and‐distribution water system to service the forecasted population. A short‐term and a long‐term plan have been developed to provide for the predicted water demand of more than half a million people.

摘要:
The water industry is always in search of new and improved methods of chemical analyses of its product—potable water supplies. This article proposes a new procedure for the analysis of anionic surfactant discharges in wastewater effluents. The procedure has been found to be reliable for linear alkylate sulfonate analysis and is also proposed as a possible new standard method.

Problems concerning trace metals must be acknowledged and dealt with when one generates continuous data on a real‐time basis. What is needed is an understanding of the response obtained by data systems and how it relates to the total trace‐metal content. This information must then be defined and resolved in terms of achievement at reasonable cost, reliability, and time scale of results.

摘要:
An analytical scheme has been developed for the separation and concentration of copper, cadmium, and zinc from waters. The ring–oven technique is employed for the final concentration step and measurement of the isolated species. Detection of concentrations of these metals well below the maximum permissible concentration is possible with this technique. It is anticipated that this procedure will be useful in field studies and as a screening device to determine compliance with standards.

摘要:
A modified methylene blue test for estimating MBAS concentrations has been developed that reduces the number of extractions from seven to two and also reduces the interference caused by chloroform‐extractable pollutants. This simplified methylene blue method is recommended for use by military personnel or treatment‐plant operators with limited training in chemistry.

摘要:
The zeta potential of different clays such as kaolinite, montomorillonite, and fuller's earth at 100, 250, 500, and 1 000 mg/l in 0.145, 0.58, 1.45, and 5.8 times 10‐4Mof aluminium sulphate at various pHs has been studied and compared with results for a surface water. The clays were selected on the basis of cation‐exchange capacity. The results are discussed with respect to the isoelectric point as an indicant for achieving optimum destabilization with an economically efficient coagulant dose.
