Water‐supply problems of a small, isolated, rural town in Pennsylvania are typical of those in many other poverty‐stricken, former mining towns scattered throughout Appalachia. The antiquated gravity–aeration system in use actually deteriorates the quality of the water, which comes originally from a well. Several recommendations are presented to improve the distribution system as well as the treatment process.

Having an OSHA inspection gives one an inside view of the standards and can give a new outlook about safety. Since the law is far‐reaching and varied, it is difficult to know all the regulations. Nevertheless, a familiarity with the standards and a knowledge of what the inspector will be looking for can be helpful in passing an inspection.

The presence of pesticides in drinking‐water supplies may pose a problem in the future. A concomitant problem is the detection of the pesticides, which occur in minute amounts. Gas chromatography is a method of detection that is sensitive and selective, making it suitable for determining the levels of pesticides in water.

At times the postulated situation of nerve gas entering community drinking‐water supplies has had an unnerving effect. The author explains that it would be difficult to deposit a harmful amount into large drinking‐water systems and that, were the gas to be dissolved into a supply source, it would under most circumstances, quickly lose its potency. The process of destroying the agent, moreover, can be accelerated by several methods.

An evaluation of five commercially available test‐kit procedures that measure free available chlorine has been conducted on both synthetic water and five natural waters. Results indicate that the syringaldazine (liquid) procedure is the only test that exhibits absolute specificity for free available chlorine and the N,N‐diethyl‐p‐phenylene diamine procedure is the most accurate and precise.
