摘要:
In this article, AWWA President John W. Cramer expresses his views on how AWWA serves the water industry. In 1958, in response to requests to expand its services, the AWWA Board of Directors created the Committee on Aims and Objectives which made the following recommendations in its report: the creation of two new standing committees, one on education and one on research, and to support this additional activity a change in dues structure is recommended, which would be scaled generally to the volume of business such companies do in the industry; and, that AWWA retain an independent management consulting firm to examine the entire aims and objectives report, the cost of implementing it, the willingness and ability of the membership to pay the bill, and AWWA's overall operations in the light of the increased activities outlined in the report.

摘要:
In the introduction to this joint discussion on maintaining water quality in distribution systems, Frank E. Dolson, President of St. Louis County Water Company, discusses the obligation of management to take responsibility for the water quality in a distribution system, develop a comprehensive water sampling program, and conduct a vigorous program of eliminating cross‐connections.

摘要:
This article discusses the construction in 1959‐60 by the Greater Winnipeg Water District of a second branch aqueduct, a reservoir system and pumping station and the connecting main. Basic design of the pumping station is discussed, along with automatic operation, pumping units, piping, valves and metering, chlorinating equipment, automatic controls, pressure control, flow control, power failure, supervisory controls, remote control of selected points, alarms, and the station building.

摘要:
This article presents the Gifford Pinchot Park water supply development as a typical example of developing facilities in areas where land availability, dam site, reservoir site, geographic location, timing of use, and budgetary requirements are not suited to the best possible measures for supplying water. This park is located on strata that have proved to be poor aquifers, but budgetary considerations require the use of possible groundwater supplies. This study further demonstrates the difficulty of obtaining well production information in areas more or less remote from developed water facilities, and demonstrates the variable quality of available information, most of which is not written, recorded, or filed with a central agency. Solving this water supply problem also shows how a careful study of discoverable engineering information, such as well location, depth, strata penetrated, and production data, along with such information as geologic history, structure, and lithology, can improve a well‐drilling program geared to the economic and geographic restrictions placed on the project.

摘要:
This article discusses a pilot‐scale study on the influence of 1‐10 ppm alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) on the underground travel of biologic forms such as the coliform organism. The tests were confined to continuous‐ flow, water‐saturated columns 6 in. in diameter and containing 10 ft of sand. The principal findings over an 18‐month test period were: ABS at 1‐10 ppm did not have a significant influence on the movement of coliform organisms through homogeneous sands that were saturated with water; coliform organisms traveled much more slowly than salt or ABS, they did not penetrate much beyond 6 ft. in 417 days when the water was moving 0.4 ft/day; doubling the rate of water movement to 0.8 ft/day merely reduced the coliform arrival time at 4 ft from 114 days to 82 days; doubling the effective size of the sand from 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm did not alter the arrival time of coliform organisms through 2 ft. of sand; and, no change in radioactive ABS35 concentration resulted from the presence and action of coliform organisms and a few other biological forms.

摘要:
This article discusses the need for a method to detect and estimate the amount of synthetic organic pesticides there are in surface water and groundwater. Such a proposed procedure is complicated by the constant introduction of new pesticides, and the increased use of pesticide formulations containing multiple compounds. The two general pesticide classes of toxicological interest are compounds which contain chloride functional groups, and compounds which inhibit the enzymatic ability of acetylcholinesterase. A single screening program is needed to identify each pesticide, estimate its concentration in microquantities, and anticipate new compounds. This article discusses a new combination of paper chromatographies and enzymatic methods, supplemented by gas chromatography, that shows great promise.

摘要:
This article begins by discussing the influence of softening chemicals, lime and soda ash, on the adsorption of taste and odor compounds by activated carbon. Although removal of taste and odor compounds is the primary function for activated carbon, additional benefits include: adsorption of such compounds as organic insecticides, herbicides, and detergents, which are relatively inert to chemical oxidation; removal of color and improvement of coagulation; and, reduction in substances having chlorine demand.
