An outbreak of Kaposi's sarcoma in homosexual men has recently been observed in New York and California which differs from the “classic” North American disease with regard to younger age of onset and clinical prognosis. Although the exact mechanism for initiation of either disease is still unknown, a viral mechanism has been suggested in both cases. In order to investigate the possible role of HLA‐as‐sociated variations in genetic susceptibility, 39 patients with histologically documented Kaposi's sarcoma were typed for HLA‐A,B,C antigens. Most of these patients were also typed for HLA‐DR antigens and for Gm allotypes. A significant increase in DR5 occurred in both groups. Decreases in B8 and DR3 and an increase in homozygosity for the Gm haplotype 3;5,13 were also noted. These results suggest that HLA and Gm linked immune response factors may play a role in the induction of both these forms of the disease.These studies were supported in part by NIH Grants CA‐08748 and CA‐22507. The myeloid cell line K562 was used to screen for specific antibodies in sera obtained from pregnant women and multitransfused patients. The alloantisera thus procured reacted with random granulocytes in a pattern suggestive of a polymorphic system. Some antibodies were found to react only in the cold. A simple reproducible method for the simultaneous separation of granulocytes and lymphocytes for microcytotoxicity is described.

As HLA testing is becoming a major vehicle for parentage determination with non‐excluded, alleged fathers being compared to their racial peers, it is important to ensure that the population data used accurately reflect the genetic profile of the region from which the alleged fathers are drawn. This paper presents data on the HLA profile of Black and White residents of North Carolina. Significant differences were observed for certain antigens when the North Carolina data were compared to nationally derived population tables. Differences were observed for B7 (increase) and Bw16 (decrease) in Whites and A10 (decrease), B7 (increase) and Bw42 (decrease) in Blacks. The B10.SAA48 congenic line was derived by transferring theH‐2 haplotype of a wild mouse onto the background of the inbred strain C57BL/10Sn (abbreviated as B10). The line carries theDw3allele in combination with an L allele different from that present in otherDw3strains. The present report describes the distribution of histocompatibility antigens in 52 patients with Alzheimer's disease. No significant associations were observed between this illness and particular HLA types before or after statistical correction for multiple comparisons. These findings are discussed in terms of the difficulties inherent in the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and with regard to the choice of suitable control populations.

Patients with familial and non‐familial (sporadic) forms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were studied to investigate possible HLA heterogeneity. HLA‐DR4 was present in 75% of familial and 59% of sporadic RA patients. HLA and Gm phenotypes were compared in 53 patients with unequivocal systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and in 180 healthy subjects. SLE was associated with HLA‐B8 (relative risk (RR) = 3.5,P<0.001) and with HLA‐DR3 (RR = 2.8,P13) and, in contrast, the risk was decreased in subjects with HLA‐B40 (RR = 0.3). The risk of SLE in subjects who were heterozygous for the Gm phenotypes a,f,x; b,g was increased (RR = 2.0,P= 0.03) relative to the risk in subjects who were homozygous for these Gm phenotypes. These findings suggest that susceptibility to SLE is influenced by one or more genes in linkage disequilibrium with the HLA‐B8‐DR3 haplotype, by “augmentor” or “protector” genes associated with other HLA antigens and by separate genes, possibly VHgenes, in linkage disequilibrium with the

In a joint study 109 unrelated HLA‐B14 positive individuals were subtyped for the provisional splits 14.1 and 14.2 respectively, based on sera of the 7th and 8th Histocompatibility Workshops. Sixty‐eight of these donors as well as 23 families were also typed for DR antigens. Earlier findings concerning a linkage disequilibrium B14.1/Aw32 and B14.2/Aw33 were confirmed.
