HLA‐A and ‐B antigens have been found in purified spermatozoa using a double fluorescence cytotoxicity tecnique and specific absorptions. HLA‐C, ‐Bw4, Bw6 and ‐DR antigens have not been found using the same techniques. Controversial results regarding HLA expression on spermatozoa have been presumably obtained because of a lack of both seminal cell purification and an appropriate more accurate cytotixicity technique. A simplified and sensitive enzyme immuno‐assay employing microtiter plates as the solid phase carrier for detection of circulating platelet antibodies and bound antiplatelet IgG has been described.The assay was done using fresh as well as frozen platelets and commercially available peroxidase labeled anti‐human IgG.The sensitivity of the enzyme immuno‐assay was found similar or superior to that of the platelet suspension immunofluorescence test and superior to the lymphocyte cytotoxicity test and the platelet complement fixation test.The use of platelets frozen in the wells of the microtiter plates (stored for up to 17 months at —20°C without loss of antigenicity) facilitates the performance of the test.In addition the small volumes of sera and platelets needed in using microtiter plates makes the assay particularly suitable in testing platelets from thrombocytopenic patients.In one of 31 sera from normal Zwa‐negative donors a weak anti‐Zwa(PIA1) was found only detectable by enzyme immuno‐assay.Alloantibodies were found in 14 of 23 patients suffering from non‐haemolytic transfusion reactions.All of three patients with post‐transfusion purpura had anti‐Zwaantibodies in serum.Anti‐Zwaantibodies were demonstrated in the sera from all of 9 Zwa‐negative mothers, who had given birth to children with alloimmune neonatal thrombocytopenia.In 8 of 12 Zwa‐positive mothers alloantibodies of other specificities were found in the serum. Mongrel dogs were given either whole blood (50 ml) or platelets prepared from 50 ml blood intravenously on three occasions before transplantation of a kidney from a different donor to that of the blood or platelets. All dogs were given azathioprine and prednisolone after transplantation. 60 × 108platelets were obtained from 50 ml blood and the leucocyte contamination was less than one leucocyte per 105platelets. The mean survival of kidney allografts in non‐transfused dogs was 11.6 days (10 dogs), in dogs pretreated with whole blood 26.6 days (5 dogs), and in dogs pretreated with platelets 29.2 days (5 dogs). Sensitisation occurred in 3 of 5 dogs given whole blood and in 2 of 5 dogs given platelets.Thus pretreatment with a relatively pure preparation of platelets will produce prolongation of survival of third party renal allografts in mongrel dogs given azathioprine and prednisolone, comparable to that produced by whole blood. Results of HLA‐A, B and C typing as well as haplotype frequencies in the Nahuas, who are the predominant Indian group in Mexico are presented. ABO and Rh blood groups show the genetic homogeneity of this population, since all of them were group O and Rh+. The most frequent antigens and haplotype are in general, the same as in some, but not all Amerindian tribes (Papago, Pimas, Zuñi from North America and Ixils from Guatemala). When‐compared to other Mongoloids, the HLA pattern is very close to the Japanese population. HLA antigens were investigated in 41 Sicilian patients with ulcerative colitis and in 151 healthy controls.
