Human lymphocytes treated with neuraminidase show cytotoxicity reactions with a larger number of alloantisera against human leukocyte antigens than do untreated lymphocytes. In general, untreated thymus cells from the lymphocyte donor give reactions comparable to those of the neuraminidase treated lymphocytes with both alloantisera and sera which fail to react with untreated lymphocytes. However, certain sera show clear distinctions between lymphocytes and thymocytes, some reacting only with thymus cells and others only with lymphocytes. The cytotoxic reactivity of lymphocytes and thymocytes correlates with the amount of sialic acid released from the cells by neuraminidase treatment in that thymocytes release less acid than cells from spleen, adenoids, tonsils, or peripheral blood.

Viable mouse skin flaps conjugated with poly‐DL‐alanine chains were obtained byin vitrotreatment with the N‐carboxyanhydride of DL‐alanine. It was assumed that the reacting groups are directly and covalently linked to the histocompatibility antigen molecules, or are in their close vicinity. Therefore, the transplantation of the poly‐DL‐alanylated skin flaps onto syngeneic recipients might provide a model for studying the behavior of antibodies of poly‐DL‐alanyl specificity in graft rejection.When purified rabbit anti‐poly‐DL‐alanyl antibodies were passively administered to mice transplanted with poly‐DL‐alanylated skin, the graft survival was sharply reduced as compared with that of the controls. This observation might suggest that certain antibodies which have been produced in rabbits, can reduce graft survival when passively administered to mice. If mice were immunized with poly‐DL‐alanyl‐RSA before grafting, in order to elicit an active production of anti‐poly‐DL‐alanyl antibodies, the poly‐DL‐alanylated skin graft survival was similar to that of the controls. The distribution of antigens has been studied on blood lymphocytes of eight AKR °CBA/H‐T6T6 chimaeras using immunoautoradiography and of male hybrids born from the mixed germ line AKR °CBA/H‐T6T6 chimaera × Balb/c involving the cytotoxicity method. Analysis of ↔ positive cells in the peripheral blood of the tetraparental chimaeras showed that the sum of both ↔ positive cell populations varied between 49 and 81 % of the total blood lymphocytes. In spite of this, there was a marked variation in the proportion of the two cell populations ‐ in some chimaeras ARK ↔ positive cells predominated, in others the reverse was true. In hybrids it is apparent that both antigens were detected, and furthermore, the total percentage exceeded 100 %. In a sibship of seven, three of four individuals who inherited the haplotype W29‐W10 showed modified expression of W10. Their lymphocytes were non‐reactive in the cytotoxic test with three of four W10 antisera, but strongly reactive with the fourth serum. The fourth sib's cells reacted strongly with all four antisera. Absorption of anti‐W10 sera by the modified cells removed cytotoxic activity, indicating the presence of W10 antigenic determinants on those cells. The HL‐A5 antigen has a higher frequency in the Indian population than in either the Caucasian or Bantu populations of South Africa. Ninety‐five Asian Indians were tested by microcytotoxicity using 34 anti‐HL‐A5 and nine anti‐W5 sera. The results confirm the heterogeneity of the HL‐A5 antigen and show that it may be subdivided into at least four parts. The Indian population of South Africa is here subdivided into four groups. The HL‐A antigen frequencies in each group are compared, and haplotype frequencies and gametic associations (delta values) have been calculated. The genetic distances (f) between these groups and between Indians. Caucasians and Bantu also are calculated. The results may indicate a differential selection with respect to the HL

The frequency of 22 HL‐A antigens in 111 patients who had had paralytic poliomyelitis in past epidemics was compared to the frequency of the same antigens in 395 blood donors. There was a significant increase of HL‐A3 and HL‐A7 in the polio patients (P<0.02,P<0.002, respectively, after the application of a correction factor for the number of comparisons). It is suggested that this association might represent an association between HL‐A and an immune response gene determining an immune response to the virus or a product of viral infection of the central nervous system. HL‐A typing was performed on 110 psoriatics and confirmed the highly increased frequencies of W17, HL‐A13 and HL‐A1‐W17 haplotype previously reported in two American works. Psoriasis was found twice as frequently among close relatives of W17 patients as in other groups. Yet, psoriasis and W17, when associated in individuals, were not always transmitted together genetically. Articular signs did not seem to have any relation to HL‐A antigens. The comparison of our results with those of two previous investigations showed probable modifications in the distribution of several HL‐A antigens: increased HL‐A1 and HL‐A2, decreased HL‐A9, W28, HL‐A7 and HL‐A12.Some immunologic disturbances appeared particularly frequently in psoriasis, namely, an elevated IgE titer in serum and an anti‐IgG activity demonstrated on peripheral blood lymphocytes and in serum. It has been noted that numerous diseases related to HL‐A are accompanied by immune perturbations.The mechanisms of association between HL‐A, immunity disorders and some diseases are discussed, including the following possibilities: indirect action of HL‐A through an epistasis phenomenon; direct action of HL‐A by antigenic cross‐reactions favouring the penetration of an aetiologic agent; no action of HL‐A which would thus only be a genetic marker linked with a lo
