摘要:
AbstractA description is provided of the way in which techniques of decision analysis were used to evaluate the profitability of acquiring resources to manufacture refrigerated container units on a regular basis. In particular, the study presented guidelines to management for planning production capacities, in terms of manpower and factory floor space, over an 11-year period, as well as indicating optimum price levels for the container units. The analysis relies heavily on the use of subjective probability assessments to forecast future values of world markets and company market share in an uncertain environment. Some general points are made on the problems and benefits of applying decision analysis to practical decision problems.

摘要:
AbstractThe concept of the holding cost is one which is standard in inventory theory. In this note it is shown that, due to the nature of the decision-making and financial structure of the hospital service in so far as it affects the officers who are responsible for the organization of hospital stores, this concept is inappropriate. A simple ordering policy which is based on the rules of the present accounting system is devised.

摘要:
AbstractCurrent methods by which supermarkets decide which new products to stock are reviewed. Certain limitations of these subjective andad hocprocedures are suggested and an alternative approach based on a screening technique is developed. The parameters of this method are shown to depend explicitly upon the observed attributes of past successful products and the opportunity costs associated with the decision of the supermarket buyer. It is demonstrated how the structure of the problem could lead naturally to its formulation in terms of a modified form of classificatory analysis. The value and economy of this approach are illustrated and discussed.

摘要:
AbstractAdaptive filtering is a technique for preparing short- to medium-term forecasts based on the weighting of historical observations, in a similar way to moving average and exponential smoothing. However, adaptive filtering, as it has been developed in electrical engineering, attempts to distinguish a signal pattern from random noise, rather than simply smoothing the noise of past data. This paper reviews the technique of adaptive filtering and investigates its applications and limitations for the forecasting practitioner. This is done by looking at the performance of adaptive filtering in forecasting a number of time series and by comparing it with other forecasting techniques.

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to develop a useful technique for solving linear programmes involving more than one objective function. Motivation for solving multicriterion linear programmes is given along with the inherent difficulty associated with obtaining a satisfactory solution set. By applying a linear programming approach for the solution of two person–zero sum games with mixed strategies, it is shown that a linear optimization problem with multiple objective functions can be formulated in this fashion in order to obtain a solution set satisfying all the requirements for an efficient solution of the problem. The solution method is then refined to take into account disparities between the magnitude of the values generated by each of the objective functions and solution preferences as determined by a decision-maker. A summary of the technique is then given along with several examples in order to demonstrate its applicability.

摘要:
AbstractFor 54 unimodular linear programming problems it is shown that either (i) the objective function is unbounded, or (ii) the problem is infeasible, or (iii) the problem can be solved by solving a related transportation problem. The related transportation problem is obtained by addingat the most two new constraintsto the original problem.
