SummarySamples of clinically normal skin from a sun‐protected site were obtained from 106 autopsy eases. For the first time epithelial apoptosis was documented in postmortem skin, and illustrated using light and electron micrographs. The epidermis was otherwise normal clinically and histologically. SummaryProlonged contact with ready mixed cement is a rare cause of severe chemical burns. A 15 year old boy required debridement and skin grafting to a burn on his knee caused by contact with cement. Asa result he lost five weeks from school. We discuss the factors that predispose to this unusual event and pose the question as to why we hear of it so infrequently.

SummaryA patient aged 16 years with a new mechanobullous disease is described. He had suffered from trauma‐induced bullae since birth. The lesions increased in hot weather and healed without scarring. The clinical picture was suggestive of Weber‐Cockayne or a mild Köbner type of epidermolysis bullosa simplex. Ultrastructural investigation of afresh blister revealed intraepidermal blister formation via cytolysis of basal cell cytoplasm at or above the hemidesmosomes to which were attached clumps of tonofilaments. On the floor of the blister the basal lamina and anchoring fibrils were normal. This type of blister morphology is characteristic of epidermolysis bullosa herpetiformis of Dowling‐Meara so that this patient has either a mild atypical form of the above disease or his case represents an example of a new subgroup of epidermolysis bullosa produced by a spontaneous allelic mu

SummaryThere is a group of disorders characterized by simultaneous and progressive fibrosis of several discrete regions of the body. This disease complex, “multifocal fibrosclerosis”, most commonly involves the retroperitoneal and mediastinal compartments and may be accompanied by cutaneous lesions. In most cases the aetiology is unknown but there is good evidence, supported by the patient we describe, for a vasculitic origin in a significant proportion of patients.We report a case of multifocal fibrosclerosis associated with cutaneous lesions. These included livedo reticularis and recurrent, painful nodules and pustules on the legs and feet, which progressed to chronic ulceration. SummaryNine subjects of Celtic and mixed European descent were exposed to small (1/2 hour) doses of ultraviolet light (UVL) on 10 consecutive days in a commercial solarium to determine the effects of UVL on epidermal melanocytes and immunocompetent Langerhans cells (LCs). Tanned and non‐tanned subjects were studied to determine whether pigmentation from melanocytes provided the LCs with any protection against these UVL effects. A transient reduction in the number of LCs occurred in response to UVL exposure, returning to near pre‐exposure levels two weeks after cessation of the solarium course. The tan which developed or deepened following the UVL exposure appeared to provide little or no protection against this reduction, regardless of whether the subjects were lightly tanned or untanned prior to the solarium course. Even though the number of subjects examined was small these results indicate that exposure to solarium UVL irradiation, even in small doses, may adversely affect the skin immune system and therefore is not recommended as a safe means of acquiring a
