SummaryTinea nigra is a rare fungal infection usually affecting the palms. Only five previous cases have been reported in Australia. Four of these were acquired in Queensland and the fifth overseas. The present report describes a patient with bilateral plantar involvement, who apparently acquired the condition in New South Wales.

SummaryFour cases illustrating aspects of multiple keratoacanthoma syndromes are reported. One patient with the classical picture of the familial Ferguson Smith variety provided an additional example of an affected family from Glasgow where the majority of the early cases were studied. The second patient displayed striking susceptibility to the effect of minor trauma in provoking new tumours and provided a unique model for the observation of the development of Keratoacanthoma. The third patient demonstrated complete disappearance of tumours during an episode of exfoliative dermatitis. The fourth patient provided an example of the interaction of nodular neurodermatitis and multiple keratoacanthomas.

SummaryIn Western Australia, a total of 2.259 scrapings from the glabrous skin grew a fungal pathogen in the 10‐year period 1963–1972. The dermatophyte most frequently isolated from these lesions was Microsporum canis, followed by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton tonsurans, in this order. Candida was responsible for only 6.3% of the infections and is not an important causal agent in infections of the glabrous skin. The majority of fungal infections occur in the 1–10 age group, 46.17% of the total; but infections occur in all age groups from a few weeks old babies to octogenarians. Total frequency of infection in males and females is equal but variations in numbers are seen to occur within different species. SummaryA total of 1,024 groin specimens were examined over a ten year period, and of these 682 (60%) were positive for a fungal infection. A very high proportion (94%) of fungal groin rashes in Western Australia occurred in the male population. The most common dermatophyte causing tinea cruris in W. A. is Trichophyton rubrum followed by Epidermophyton floccosum. Candida injections comprised 37% of the total fungal groin infections.

SummaryTinea barbae due to fungal agents is an uncommon condition compared with the other tinea types studied in Western Australia. Only 34 cases were seen by my laboratory in the 10‐year period from 1963 to 1972. SummaryPityriasis versicolor is a relatively common skin disease in Western Australia. Four hundred and fifty cases were referred to the Mycology Laboratory for confirmation in the 10 year period 1963–1972. Since this series concluded we have seen approximately 200 cases each year. SummarySkin biopsies from the hands of twenty patients with myeloproliferative diseases (chronic myeloid leukemia, polycythemia vera, erythroleukemia and myelofibrosis) were studied by histological and histochemical techniques and electron microscopy, for the presence of microvascular lesions in the skin. In all cases there was a microangiopathy of variable intensity in the dermis. It was characterized by PAS positive thickening of the basal membrane and marked endothelial alterations with decrease of the vascular lumen. Electron microscopy showed a characteristic segmentary thickening of the basal membrane with an increased electron density and deposits of an amorphous material.The morphological and histochemical resemblance to the characteristics of the microangiopathy seen in diabetes is quite remarkable. There was no abnormality of the carbohydrate metabolism, and there must be quite different aetiological factors such as metabolic, immunological and haemodynamic.It would be interesting to investigate the aetiological aspects of this microangiopathy to understand how the biology of the malignant diseases produces the compromise of the microclrculation.
