SummaryIn a restrospective study of 3,128 patients with primary melanoma, 90 were found to have more than one primary lesion, an incidence of 2.9%. Wherever possible, comparisons were made between single and multiple primary lesion patients with reference to age. Sex, racial background, skin, hair, eye colouring, distribution and characteristics of the primary melanoma lesions. Patients with one melanoma had a greater risk of developing another and their skin appeared to be more susceptible to sun damage. Patients with multiple abnormal pigmented naevi also had an increased risk of developing a second primary melanoma. Having one primary lesion tended to alert both patient and doctor and resulted in earlier diagnosis of the second lesion. Although these patients developed multiple melanomas, their prognosis was more favourable than in patients with a single primary melanoma.

SummaryThe diagnoses of 1,000 personal cases in a private dermatological specialist practice in South Australia over six months are recorded and analysed. Skin aging and malignancy accounted for 26.3%, constitutional eczema for 12.6 %, infections 11.4%, psoriasis 11.3% and adverse effects from chemicals and drugs, used either externally or internally, 9.8%. Clinical data is readily recorded in dermatological practice and clinical epidemiology could be valuable in assessing what steps in preventive medicine might be taken.

SummaryAbnormalities demonstrated in women with idiopathic hirsutism include elevated serum levels of various androgens, increased androgen production rates and decreased levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). In this study an attempt was made to correlate the severity of hirsutism (as graded by the method of Ferriman and Gallwey) with the levels of serum androgens and SHBG. In the group studied measurement of SHBG appeared to be a better index of the hyperandrogenic state than measurement of androgen levels themselves. Correlations were also made between the Ferriman and Gallwey subscores in the various body sites and the overall severity of hirsutism.

SummaryIn comparing two patients with typical Netherton s syndrome it was noticed that one patient was dwarfed while the other had a transient growth abnormality. A consequent review of 32 other patients revealed 12 with abnormal growth patterns. It is suggested that dwarfism should be considered to be an additional characteristic of this syndrome.

SummaryA prevalence survey of occupational dermatoses in a tyre company with 999 workers and a cement company with 151 workers is reported. High prevalence rates for occupational dermatitis exist in both factories but are twice as high in the cement (68.5 per 1000) than the tyre factory (37.3 per 1000). Low rates of occupational allergic dermatitis in the tyre factory are noted. Factory records in the tyre factory nevertheless reveal little absenteeism associated with this disease. Very high rates of oil follicualitis exist at the cement factory. A skin staining reaction confined to the tyre factory is revealed. It is concluded that, despite the low absenteeism noted, occupational dermatoses are nevertheless important occupational diseases.

SummaryBiopsy specimens from 159 patients with mycetoma filed in the departments of pathology of four medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, India, were examined histologically; small grain mycetoma due to Nocardia species was found in 27 cases.
