Individual Service Plans (ISPs) are often used to guide habilitative services for persons with intellectual disabilities. In the present study, we reviewed the types of goals included in the ISPs for 20 nonverbal individuals with severe disabilities and challenging behaviours from a large residential centre in Australia. Most goals focused on reducing challenging behaviour, teaching self‐care and domestic skills or described assessment and referral activities. Relatively little emphasis was given to increasing communication/language, recreation/leisure or community living skills. Behaviour management goals included strategies to suppress challenging behaviour and increase adaptive alternatives, as well as various ecological and physiological approaches. Habilitative services might be improved by including more goals on communication/language, recreation/leisure and community living skills. It is also recommended that behaviour management goals be based on a more thorough assessment of the variables controlling challenging behaviou

摘要:
As a part of the resettlement programme, three young men with learning disabilities and behaviour disorder moved to a flat in the community providing one‐to‐one staffing. A fourth man received respite care. A multi‐professional team evaluated various aspects of their care and found that they showed an increase in engaged behaviour, a decrease in disturbed behaviour reflected by increase in MRC‐HBS scores and a decrease in violent incidents. 摘要:
The current pattern of services for people with severe or profound learning disabilities is radically different from that of just twenty years ago. For many people, ordinary housing now provides a real alternative to the long stay hospital, attempts to replace day centres with supported employment initiatives are gaining momentum and some progress is being made toward a more integrated system of education. Aided over recent years by funding improvements and policy guidance under theAll Wales Strategy(Welsh Office, 1983) Clwyd is one County where considerable headway has been made. The transition, however, has not been easy — change brings its own challenges. One of the major challenges facing service providers in Clwyd has been the provision of good quality community services for people with learning disabilities who display very challenging behaviour.This paper describes one service initiative which has formed part of Clwyd's overall response to challenging behaviour — the Clwyd Intensive Support Team (IST). In this paper, we explain our working definition of challenging behaviour before going on to describe the development of the Team, how it has operated and what the pattern of referrals has been like over the first three years. In a second paper, we will report on how the Team used its time, maintenance of outcomes to date, consumer satisfaction and what the Team has cost. We will conclude by delineating what we believe to be the essential elements of a specialist challenging‐behaviour peripatetic support

As a contribution to National Integration Week during 1992, BILD organised a special one day conference to explore the arguments for and against the integration of all children with disabilities into ordinary schools. The Great Integration Debate provided a forum for parents, teachers and other professionals and students who had experienced different forms of special educational provision. The motion under debate was quite simply ‘special schools should be abolished’. The debate created a great deal of interest and it was suggested that the main position of papers might be of interest to a much wider audience than was able to attend on the day.
