摘要:
Simple experimental conditions for imaging through diffraction gratings are considered involving binocular disparity and fusion of different images. Two-wavelength images obtained when observing with suitable colour filters naturally produce the perception of a single virtual object with different degrees of stereopsis.

摘要:
Results are presented of time-resolved optoacoustic studies on model media consisting of absorbing particles suspended in various liquids (transparent, absorbing and scattering). This method opens up new possibilities in the localization of absorbing particles in various media.

摘要:
We introduce a nonlinear optical technique for the creation of small-scale phase distortions in coherent optical systems. This technique uses the nonlinear response of a liquid-crystal light valve placed in a two-dimensional optical feedback system to produce a controllable spatially and temporally varying chaotic intensity distribution. The intensity pattern is converted into a spatially varying thin phase screen using a second liquid-crystal light valve. A chaotic phase distortion is then introduced into the output image of a coherent imaging system by propagation through the phase screen.

摘要:
Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) have been under investigation for use in electro-optic devices for over a decade. In this review the development of the studies of the optics of FLCs over this period is discussed. Starting from the first electro-optic switching studies undertaken in 1980 by Noel Clark and Sven Lagerwall, and the structure in a FLC cell proposed to explain the effects, the process of developing understanding is followed. The review concentrates on the structure revealed to be present in a FLC filled cell, as this is of central importance in the development of optical devices using this material. Problems encountered in device development, and the approaches taken to overcome them are discussed, including special surface alignments, AC stabilization, and treatment of cells with large electric fields. FLC continuum theory is also discussed as this is needed for calculation of the liquid crystal director profiles, and hence the determination of optical performance. More recent developments in anti-ferroelectric liquid crystals and novel switching mechanisms are considered. An appendix outlines the 4 × 4 matrix approach to device optics calculations.

摘要:
When the diffraction pattern of the focused laser beam of the read-out system falls on the plane surface between the pits (or bumps), substantially all the light is reflected back to pass through the focusing objective. When it falls on a bump (or pit), phase differences are imparted to the light in the diffraction pattern, and some of the light returning from the disc is diffracted to pass outside the focusing objective; it is this reduction in the light returning through the objective that constitutes the read-out signal. The strength of this signal depends on the height profile of the bump or pit which (because of the photoresist process) will show more or less ‘rounding’ of the edges.

摘要:
We consider a system of two harmonic quantum oscillators in interaction with a white noise ‘heat’ bath and discuss peculiarities due to their induced coupling. We derive from the Markov approximation exact expressions for the stationary occupation numbers, the spectrum of the emitted light and the intensity correlation functions. We compare the results to the situation of coupled two-level atoms.

摘要:
We study numerically the effects of local-field corrections originating from near dipole—dipole interactions on the dynamics of a single mode, inhomogeneously broadened laser. Our analysis is based on a set of generalized Maxwell–Bloch equations in which the inhomogeneous nature of gain broadening is accounted for by introducing two new dynamical variables and a single parameter that governs the extent of inhomogeneous broadening. Our results show that local-field effects occurring in a dense gain medium reduce the range of continuous wave operation and lead to instabilities and chaos at much lower pumping levels.

摘要:
New conservation laws are derived for free electromagnetic fields propagating into a half-space. Such fields can be represented by an angular spectrum of electromagnetic plane waves that contains only homogeneous plane waves. The similarity between some of these new conservation laws and the Poynting theorem is examined in detail.

摘要:
A comparison is made between computed phase sensitivities of the output intensities of twelve different types of optical fibre single-loop resonators using a non-planar or planar (collinear) 3 × 3 fibre coupler. The dependence of the phase sensitivities on major parameters of the fibre and the 3 × 3 fibre coupler is investigated. It is found that four types of fibre resonators (the PFPOFR1, PFPOFL5, TFPOFR and PFPOFR3) have high phase sensitivities (they are the highest phase sensitivities among many passive fibre ring and loop resonators with one to two 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 fibre couplers), while those of the rest are relatively small. These four types of fibre resonators may therefore be used as optical sensors.
