AbstractThis study found intellectual and academic functioning of 76 children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis to be normally distributed. Intellectual functioning was related inversely to age, and both intellectual and academic functioning were related directly to socioeconomic status. Medical status did not add a significant increment in the amount of variance in intellectual and academic functioning accounted for by age and socioeconomic status.

AbstractThis study found 57% of parents of 35 children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (4 to 14 years of age) to have self‐reported poor psychological adjustment. The hypothesized mediational variables of parent appraisal of stress, relative use of palliative coping methods, and level of family conflict accounted for 58% of the variance in general distress, 50% in depressive symptoms, and 31% in anxiety symptoms. AbstractOne hundred sixty‐eight subjects completed a 105‐item questionnaire that explored their beliefs about the cause, correlates, and cures of anorexia nervosa. The questionnaire was derived from interviews with lay people that concerned their beliefs and theories about anorexia. The three parts of the questionnaire were individually factor analyzed, and an interpretable factor structure emerged for each. While age and body size did not correlate with these factors, sex, personal experience of eating disorders, and being acquainted with an anorexic were significant correlates of a number of factors. AbstractThe present study examined coping tendencies and perceptions of problem‐ solving ability in test anxiety. A sample of 125 students completed the revised Ways of Coping Questionnaire, the Academic Problem‐Solving Inventory, and measures of state and trait test anxiety. Correlational analyses confirmed that emotion‐focused coping (i.e., avoidant and confrontive coping) was associated positively with test anxiety. Also, test‐anxious individuals reported poorer ability to solve academic problems. Finally, regression analyses revealed that coping tendencies and perceived problem‐solving ability predicted unique variance in test‐anxiety scores. The results are discussed in terms of the need for a multidimensional model of test anxiety that includes coping processes and self‐evaluations of problem‐

AbstractThe consistent finding that normal adolescents endorse more MMPI items in the deviant direction than do normal adults, reflected in reliable adolescent‐ adult differences on the item, scale, and profile levels, suggests a developmental perspective. This perspective also implies that college students' MMPI mean raw scores might be expected to fall between means typically obtained for adolescents and adults. We examined 17 studies of college volunteer samples to evaluate this hypothesis. Findings showed that college student mean values do fall between adolescent and adult means, most strikingly on scales F, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9. It is recommended that more attention be given to the status of college students as a special population with distinctive MMPI characteristic

AbstractThis project examined the use of a short inventory based on the validity subscales from the MMPI‐2. In Study 1, 69 subjects responded to the extracted L, F, and K items and to those items when embedded in the complete MMPI‐2. Correlations between administrations were equivalent to the original test‐retest reliabilities for these scales. In Study 2, 60 subjects responded to the short‐form with instructions to be honest, fake good, or fake bad. The correct classification rate was 77% using the standard MMPI‐2 rules of L>70T for faking good and F>70T for faking bad. Taken together, these findings suggest that the short‐form may be useful alone or when combined with other questionnaires to identify potential problems in

AbstractThis study compared the ability of the MCMI personality scales to accurately predict anger and psychosis in White (n= 778) and Black (n= 272) psychiatric inpatients. Race‐adjusted norms (Millon, 1984) were used to compute patients' scale scores. The MCMI successfully predicted anger and psychosis for both races (p.40). In addition, the scales important for prediction were similar for Whites and Blacks. The Passive‐ Aggressive Scale best predicted anger, whereas the Avoidant Scale best predicted psychosis. AbstractThis study investigated the reliability and validity of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) Short Form in a group of female bereaved adults. Two hundred fifty‐five community‐based women bereaved less than 2 years completed the BDI. Estimate of the alpha coefficient indicates that the short‐ form BDI possesses adequate internal reliability for this sample. AbstractThe present study examined the sensitivity of the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE) in detecting the frontal lobe dysfunction that occurs with normal aging. Eighty normal, independently living older adults in four age groupings from 50 to 89 were administered the MMSE along with three neurocognitive measures sensitive to frontal lobe functioning. Results revealed age‐related cognitive decline on frontal lobe tasks that also was detected by the MMSE. These findings are noteworthy because the MMSE was intended as a measure of gross cognitive status rather than of frontal lobe function

AbstractWAIS‐R subtest and composite scale reliabilities, standard errors of measurement, and standard errors of estimate were determined for a sample of psychiatric inpatients (N= 100). For Digit Span and Digit Symbol, test‐ retest stability coefficients were obtained; split‐half reliability coefficients were calculated for all other subtests. With the exception of Object Assembly (rxx=.38), all subtest and composite scale reliability coefficients were large and acceptable. Based on the standard error of measure, the most reliable WAIS‐R subtests were Digit Symbol (.77), Information (1.04), and Picture Completion (1.07). Reliability coefficients for the psychiatric inpatient sample were, in general, comparable to those values reported for the standardization group (Wechsler, 1981).
