AbstractIt was proposed that bulimic behavior could be explained in part in terms of cognitive deficit, in which poor self‐control and a lack of sensitivity to eating satiety cues contribute to binging behavior. College women (N= 80) who showed characteristics associated with bulimics (BP) had been found less capable of self‐control than control women (C) in a previous study. The present study revealed a tendency for BP college women to be less cognizant of eating satiety cues and less responsive to these cues as far as termination of eating is concerned. However, this was true only when they also reported a diminished ability to focus attention upon a narrow range of stimulation. When BP women described themselves as more capable of focused attention, they showed greater awareness of and responsiveness to cues signaling satiation while eating. AbstractA multivariate strategy for the cognitive study of overlapping symptom disorders is presented and exemplified by an empirical investigation. Inpatients who met DSM‐III‐R criteria for anxiety and/or unipolar depressive disorders were assessed on 13 agoraphobic and depressive symptom subscales. Factor analyses of these scales were performed and yielded an agoraphobic and a depressive factor. The patients (N= 117) completed the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales, the Attributional Style Questionnaire, and the Ways of Coping Check List. Stepwise regression analyses were performed with the cognitive and coping variables as independent variables. AbstractThe association between sexual disorders and psychological functioning was investigated in this study. Seventy‐eight subjects who applied for sex therapy were divided into the following groups: Sexual Desire (SDD) and Erectile Disorder; Orgasm (ORG) and Premature ejaculation (PME) disorders. Fifty‐six sexually functional subjects served as matched controls. The MMPI was administered to all subjects. The results indicated that the SDD and Erectile groups produced the most disturbed profiles, while the ORG and PME groups yielded profiles within normal limit (WNL). AbstractTo test the hypothesis that relationship beliefs are related to marital adjustment, 46 married couples completed the Relationship Belief Inventory (RBI) and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Significant correlations were found between the DAS scores and the D and S subscales of the RBI. It was shown that the low dyadic adjustment group made significantly more extreme evaluations compared to the high adjustment group. It also was found that individuals' perceptions of their spouses' relationship beliefs did not display the same trends observed with traditional personality questionnaires, in which marital adjustment was related to female accuracy and greater real similarity between spouses.

AbstractThis study is based on 18 patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital with a DSM‐III‐R diagnosis of schizophrenia who currently were living with one or both parents. Patients and parents completed several questionnaires, including the Parental Bonding Index (PBI), the Family Environment Scale (FES), the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ), and the Brief Symptoms Inventory. Observer ratings of patients' symptoms also were made. Outcome was predicted best by patients' ratings of mothers on the PBI and by mothers' scores on the HDHQ Criticism of Others scale. Other significant outcome predictors were the number of previous admissions to hospital, patients' scores on the HDHQ Projected Hostility scale and the FES Expressiveness scale, and fathers' scores on the FES Achievement‐Orientation

AbstractThe production and manufacture of microelectronic components, carried out primarily by women workers, require extensive use of organic solvents. Affective and personality disturbances frequently have been associated with organic solvent toxicity. A group of women, former microelectronics workers (N= 70), primarily of Hispanic origin (77.1%) but raised in the United States, were evaluated for affective and personality disturbance with the MMPI. Profiles were analyzed, and diagnostic classification was performed blind. Results showed that (1) 85.7% of the profiles indicated abnormally high clinical elevations; and (2) MMPI profile classification revealed four clinical diagnostic groups: somatoform (24.3%), depression (15.7%), anxiety (28.6%), and psychotic (14.3%). These findings indicate significant psychopathology among these women, who formerly had worked in a microelectronics plant. The patterns of impairment present similarities to previous reports of organic solvent toxicity.

AbstractThe relationship between gender role and at‐risk patterns for eating dysfunction was examined in this study of 206 men and women. The Bem Sex Role Inventory (Bem, 1974) and the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI; Garner, Olmsted,&Polivy, 1983) were the measures used. In accordance with the psychocultural model, it was expected that gender role and gender would interact across the risk factors. An interaction between gender and gender role was found across factors associated with eating disorders: different gender role identities contributed differentially to specific risk factors. The data contribute to a growing body of literature that suggests that the relationship between gender role and eating dysfunction is complex and requires multidimensional conceptualization

AbstractThis study examined two possible patterns of ethnic differences in responses to Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale items: isolated differences in relatively disparate items and consistent differences in conceptually related items. Data were from randomly selected household residents (4,222 Mexican‐Americans, 1,063 non‐Hispanic Whites). The most common symptoms reflected lack of positive affect; least common were crying, feelings of failure, and feeling disliked. Mexican‐Americans were more likely than non‐Hispanic Whites to report symptoms that reflect lack of positive affect, which suggests possible limitations on this dimension's cross‐cultural validity. U.S.‐born Mexican‐Americans reported more somatic and negative affect symptoms than did the Mexican‐born, which suggests an overall immigration difference in

AbstractThe Diagnostic Inventory of Personality and Symptoms (DIPS; Vincent, 1985) is a self‐rating instrument that yields 14 clinical scale scores and a validity scale score. The scale scores present diagnostic classification information derived from major DSM‐III diagnostic categories. This study replicates and extends a previous factor study by Vincent and Duthie (1986). DIPS data were collected from 170 psychiatric inpatients and outpatients. Both a principal components analysis and an oblique, cluster‐oriented, marker variable factor analysis of the 14 clinical scale scores resulted in four factors, the first three of which reproduced the pattern of factor loadings found by Vincent and Duthie (1986).
