AbstractRainfall simulators, that are commonly used in erosion research should produce comparable runoff and soil loss. At present five types of field rainfall simulators are used in Germany and Switzerland. The experimental setup on a Hapludalf soil site for testing these simulators and one laboratory rainfall simulator are described. Fifty rainfall simulations were carried out during two days on a homogeneous field. Hence, small deviations in slope steepness (<2%) resulted in 40% deviations in the S factor of the USLE. This strong influence of slope steepness necessitates a high accuracy in the measurement of this parameter.Soil moisture during the two days was very high. This reduced slaking due to air inclusions and should have helped to detect differences in soil detachment due to the different rain structures and test procedures.

AbstractThe utility, vehicle required, the time needed for assembly and relocation and the costs associated with six different rainfall simulators were studied. The results can be summarized as follows:1The simulator designed byKainz&Eicher(1990) is the least expensive to operate. This simulator also has excellent experimental versatility. Its only restriction is a short slope length.2The rainfall simulator ofKarl&Toldrian(1973) is also inexpensive to operate, but because of disadvantages such as low falling height, wind susceptibility, and the need for more workers than other simulators, it should be used mainly where other simulators are not practical (forests, steep slopes, or long slopes).3The rainfall simulator ofRichter et al.(1988) has limited mobility in the field and is highly susceptible to wind drift. Moreover, its narrow plots do not cover a representative unit of a cultivated field.4The modifiedSwanson‐type simulator(Auerswald, (1986) is suitable for large plots if a sufficient water supply is available.5The simulator ofKromer&Vöhringer(1988) has the highest fixed costs, but labour is used efficiently.6The simulator ofSchmidt(1983) can only be considered for stationary use because of its long assembly time. AbstractThe changes of soil Eh and pH during decomposition of nitrates at different levels of glucose (0%; 0, 5% and 1.0%) and nitrates (0%; 0,5%; 1% and 2% KNO3) in water saturated soil samples (Ah horizon of a Mollic Gleysol) were examined. It was found that in the presence of 0–2% nitrates and 0,5–1% glucose in the soil with 1–2 days anaerobiosis at 20°C resulted in the increase of reduction processes and a decrease of redox potential up to 500 mV (Eh). Soil pH increased in the range of 2.5 units. The results from the model experiment ‐ implying Eh>200 mV and pH<6.5 as range of nitrate stability in the soil studied ‐ can be useful for field conditions both to predict the stability of nitrates in the soil environment and to create proper conditions for the effective use of carbon sources as a main factor of redox trans

AbstractSamples from subhorizons Ol, Of, and Oh of forest soils were separated be screening them into five disintegration fractions. Metal contents have been determined in individual fraction.With increasing transformation of the organic material in the most samples there proceeds a concentration of heavy metals in the order: Fe>Cu>Ni>Zn>Pb; in the same time, content of Mn decreases. Among alkali and alkaline earth metals content of Mg increases and content of Ca decreases. Na and K contents do not show definite relationships with disintegration degree of the organic material.The present results illustrate the trends in the changes in concentrations of various metals due to processes of mineralization and humification of the organic material under definite biocenotic and habitat conditions.

AbstractTo improve the quality of forest soils by applying basic rock powders tests were carried out in Vorarlberg (Austria) in 1987: in the vicinity of Möggers on Stagno‐Mollic Gleysol underAbieti‐Fagetum luzuletosum, in Nenzing on Calcaric Regosol and Cambisol underAbieti‐Fagetum luzuletosumand in Montafon on Stagno‐Dystric Gleysol underHomogyno‐Piceetum. The effects of a low dosage of rock powder application on nitrification, basal respiration, microbial biomass, xylanase, phosphatase and protease activities, the amount of nitrate nitrogen (NO3−‐N), and the soil pH were investigated. Additions of rock powder increased protease, NO3−‐N content and pH, but decreased phosphatase in the Ah‐horizon of the Stagno‐Mollic Gleysol. After 3 years the Ah‐horizon from the experimental site Nenzing showed statistically verified differences of all investigated parameters except xylanase. In the acid spruce forest soils of the Montafon site the rock powder had no statistically significant effect on microbiological parameters. Only the soil pH increased. AbstractFür die Wirksamkeit der Sproßdüngung ist der zeitliche Verlauf der Aufnahme der applizierten Nährstoffe eine wichtige Größe. Mit einer Tauchbehandlung junger Weizenpflanzen in Cu‐ bzw. Mn‐Sulfatlösungen (0,02% Cu bzw. 0,1% Mn) und nachfolgender Abwaschung der Nährstoffbeläge zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten bis zu 7 Tagen wurde die Aufnahme der applizierten Elemente bestimmt. Die Inkorporation erfolgte anfänglich sehr rasch, nach wenigen Stunden ging sie in eine Phase langsamer Aufnahme über.Im Zeitraum von 7 Tagen wurden von den applizierten Mengen 28 % des Cu, aber 80% des Mn aufgenommen. AbstractIn Modellversuchen wurde die Cu‐Aufnahme junger Sommerweizenpflanzen nach Blattapplikation verschiedener Cu‐Präparate (Cu‐Sulfat, Cu‐Oxidchlorid, Cu‐EDTA, Cu‐Ligninsulfonat) im Zeitraum von 48 Stunden bestimmt. Aus Cu‐Oxidchlorid wurde wesentlich weniger Cu aufgenommen als aus den übrigen Cu‐Präparaten. Benetzende Zusätze, z. T. in Kombination mit Harnstoff und Saccharose, erhöhten die Haftung der Cu‐Präparate und förderten die Cu‐Aufnahme. In Gefäßversuchen mit einem Cu‐Mangelboden erwies sich Cu‐Ligninsulfonat unter Zusatz von Alkylphenolpolyglykoläther, Harnstoff und Saccharose als wirksamstes Cu‐Präparat. AbstractZur Bestimmung der spezifischen Oberfläche von Böden wurde ein Probenkollektiv von 140 Bodenhorizonten ausgewählt und auf physikalische und chemische Eigenschaften untersucht. Die spezifische Oberfläche der Proben wurde über die Adsorption von H2O, Äthylenglycolmonoethyläther (EGME) und N2ermittelt. Im Methodenvergleich wird deutlich, daß sich die über die Adsorption von H2O und EGME ermittelten spezifischen Oberflächen nicht signifikant unterscheiden. Dagegen weicht die über N2‐Adsorption berechnete spezifische Oberfläche erheblich von der mit den polaren Stoffen (H2O bzw. EGME) gemessenen ab.Als abhängige Variable wird die spezifische Oberfläche in erster Linie durch den Tongehalt und den Tonmineralbestand bestimmt. Darüber hinaus beeinflussen die Gehalte an organischer Substanz sowie Eisen‐ und Manganoxiden die spezifische Oberfläche um so mehr, je geringer der Tongehalt bzw. der Gehalt an aufweitbaren Dreischichtmineralen ist. Als unabhängige Variable erweist sich die über die Adsorption von EGME berechnete spezifische Oberfläche als die Bodenkenngröße, die die effektive Kationenaustauschkapazität sowie die Hygroskopizität mit dem höchsten

AbstractDuring the past 60 years there has been a considerable decline in pH in mineral soil beneath spruce and beech stands at Tönnersjöheden Experimental Forest in south‐west Sweden. In this report an attempt is made to estimate the corresponding declines in base cation pools. The exchangeable storage of Na, K, Ca and Mg in soil, down to 70 cm depth, is calculated to have decreased by 57–60 per cent for beech and by 56–74 per cent for the spruce stands during the period 1927–1984. The calculated cation depletions are compared with estimated nutrient uptake in biomass, base cation release by weathering and leaching losses due to percolation of strong mineral acids and organic anions during the period. The biological acidification may explain about 50–60 per cent of the total losses of base cations from soil, the cation accumulation in biomass then explain 41–43 per cent units for beech and 34–45 per cent units for spruce. The estimated losses of base cations due to acid rain correspond to an amount of cations similar to that accumulated in the spruce biomass during
