AbstractDevelopment of the nozzle separation process for enrichment of uranium. In the nozzle separation process an enrichment of235U is achieved by extremely high centrifugal forces in a curved flow of UF6diluted with a light gas. In Brazil a cascade section consisting of 24 nozzle separation stages has been constructed and has been in operation since late 1985. To produce nozzle separation systems with extremely small characteristic dimensions permitting plant operation at atmospheric pressure, a manufacturing process has been developed which relies on combined X‐ray lithography and microgalvanic deposition (LIGA‐technology). Using this technology the prototype separation stages constructed at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center enable commercial nozzle separation plants with capacities of up to 3 Mio. The article assumes a knowledge of the basic concepts of artificial intelligence and expert‐system technology. AbstractSafety analyses conducted by companies operating chemical plant. The problems with safety analyses have shifted from existing plants to analyses for plants which are subject to an approval procedure. The latter require more effort and cause additional problems although legislation requirements are identical for both types. At BASF safety analyses are carried out by a group of experts responsible for design and operation of the respective plant. The authorities of the State of Rheinland‐Pfalz have formed a team to examine these analyses statewide. Difficulties still exist in presenting every possible hazard source and sequence of failure steps and in quantifying the effects of a hypothetical breakdown. AbstractPacked columns. Packed towers with dumped or regular packings are widely used in industry for accomplishing chemical engineering processes. Packed columns are able to work economically even under extreme process conditions (e. g. vacuum, high temperature, aggressive flow mediums), because of the available variety of packing types and the straight‐forward manufacture of the individual packing elements from almost any material. The present contribution shows the different kinds of packings arranged according to their geometry and physical properties. A packed tower for gas/liquid countercurrent operation is shown as a basic construction with the necessary internals.
