AbstractPowellc.s. deduced from an X‐ray study that solid PCl5has to be considered as [PCl4+] [PCl6−]. From the distances between P and Cl in PCl4+and in PCl6−given by the authors, force constants fPCl4+and fPCl6−have been calculated usingBadger's rule. From these f values and by a comparison with the results of a similar calculation for SiCl4it follows that the strongest lines of the Raman spectrum of PCl5, namely 358(15) and 451 (7), belong tov1(PCl6−) andv1(PCl4+) respectively. With these frequencies known, it is possible to make an estimate of the frequencies to be expected for the other Raman‐active vibrations of both ions. A probable assignment of Raman shifts to vibrations of PCl4+and PCl6−is given. Force constants have been calculated for both ions, using formulae based onNath's force field and on the orbital valence force field introduced byHeathandLinnett, Probable frequency values: PCl4+173, 244, 451, 627; PCl6

AbstractThe Raman spectra (inclusive of polarization measurements) of liquid and solid AlCl3. NH3have been taken.An assignment of frequency shifts to vibrations of AlCl3. NH3(symmetry C3v) ‐ somewhat different from that assumed byGoubeauandSiebert‐ has been given. Force constants have been calculated from these frequencies withWagner's formulae.To the symmetrical stretching vibration of N‐H in Cl3Al. NH3a frequency has been assigned by us (liquid 3247 cm−1; solid 3259 cm−1), which is higher than the one assumed byGoubeauandSiebert(2900 cm−1). Our value shows a rather small difference from the corresponding one

AbstractThe deposition of carbon on cotton from solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate of varying concentration was determined, together with the adsorption isotherms of NaDS on both cotton and carbon, and the aggregate size of the carbon in the suspensions.An optimum concentration for protection against deposition of carbon was found far below the critical micelle concentration, and not correlating with either the presumed values of the zeta‐potential nor the extent of surface coverage by adsorbed detergent. AbstractThe structure of some of the compounds mentioned in our investigation of metanethole was still under discussion.It has been found that metanethole has the structure V. When 1‐p‐methoxyphenyl‐2‐methyl‐3‐ethyl‐6‐methoxyindene‐1, formula I, is brominated2), the product IV is obtained. To the metanethole oxidation product, m.p. 115‐116°3), formula X4)5) applies. AbstractThe action of phosphorus oxychloride and sulphuryl chloride on 4‐chloro‐ and 4‐hydroxypyridine‐N‐oxide and on their 3‐chloro‐derivatives has been investigated.Under the conditions chosen the acid chlorides reacted differently. Phosphorus oxychloride replaced the hydroxyl group by chlorine and promoted the deoxidation of the N‐oxide group. Sulphuryl chloride removed the oxygen atom of the N‐oxide group, introducing at the same time chlorine at one of the α‐positions; further it replaced the hydrogen atoms at the β‐positions by chlorine, but not the hydroxyl group.A substance whose analysis pointed to the formula C5Cl7NO was isolated from the reaction mixture obtained by heating 4‐hydroxypyridine‐N‐oxide, its 3‐chloro, 3,5‐dichloro or 3‐nitro derivative with an excess of sulphuryl chloride. It is assumed to be 1,2,2′,3,3′,5,6‐heptachloro‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydropyridone‐4,inter aliabecause of its reduction yielding 2,3,5,6‐tetrachloro‐4‐hydroxypyridine. The last‐mentioned compound was identified with preparations synthesized from pentachloropyridine and 4‐amino‐2,3,5,6‐tetrachloropyridine. The substance C5Cl7NO was also obtain

AbstractThe rate of the coupling reaction between β‐naphthol and p‐diazobenzenesulphonic acid is lowered by addition of caffeine. This effect can be explained by complex formation between caffeine and the two reactants. The complex between caffeine and β‐naphthol is of the 1‐1 type; that between caffeine and p‐diazobenzenesulphonic acid probably also. Complexity constants have been determined. In the presence of caffeine the reaction follows two (or three) separate paths, one involving an activated complex consisting of one β‐naphtholate ion and one diazonium ion, and one (or two) involving an activated complex consisting of one molecule of each of the reactants and one molecule of caffeine. AbstractSome years ago it was found that ethoxy‐acetylene (ethoxy‐ethine) is a very mild reagent for the preparation of carboxylic anhydrides.Afterwards we observed that also non‐carboxylic acids are transformed into their anhydrides by this reagent.2 RCOOH + HC ≡ C‐OC2H5→ (RCO)2O + CH3COOC2H52 RSO3H + HC ≡ C‐OC2H5→ (RSO2)2O + CH3COOC2H5From a recent paper byE. R. H. Jonesand co‐workers2) it appears that these investigators examined the same reactions. Experiments with several mono‐ and dibasic carboxylic acids and with a sulphonic acid are recorded.
