Economic price adjustment (EPA) clauses can be used effectively as tools for mitigating price‐escalation risks in long‐term contracting. This approach provides for the negotiation of a mechanism that can automatically adjust contract recoveries in response to fluctuations in price levels in specific sectors of the economy. EPA clauses result not only in risk reduction for the supplier but also, if used wisely, in lower prices for the buyer.

An increasing number of manufacturing firms are developing and implementing just‐in‐time (JIT) systems. A unique feature of a JIT system is the new partnership philosophy of the buyer‐seller organizations, which is essential to its successful implementation. This article is based on the results of an empirical study of OEM adopters of the JIT concept. It demonstrates the dramatic effect of the system on traditional buyer‐seller practices, measures the performance results to date, and points up the key role of purchasing and materials management in developing successful buyer‐seller JIT linkages.

The author is engaged in an ongoing research project dealing with the management of large‐scale projects in the construction and extraction industries in Western Canada. This article reports on one important aspect of the findings: the involvement of procurement and logistics personnel in the various phases of such projects. He identifies a number of problems and discusses suggestions for improved operating effectiveness.

Single sourcing is a purchasing policy that purportedly can produce significant benefits for both parties involved. This article takes a close look at the pros and cons of single sourcing, particularly from the perspective of the vendor. It is important that buyers understand the factors that are likely to motivate a vendor to enter into this type of relationship. With this understanding, a buyer is better prepared to explore the possibility of single sourcing arrangements with selected vendors.

Buyers, informed of a pending price increase, have had to employ complex strategies and equations to determine whether or not to purchase a special order quantity before the price increase becomes effective. This article provides the buyer who is pressed for time with a relatively simple three‐step procedure for determining the most economical decision. The model is modified to make it more consistent with the business environment. Computer graphics are employed to show the relationships between variables in the equations.
