SummaryElectrophoretic variants of serum esterases and β‐globulins in two subspecies of paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis) were studied. Four esterase loci (Est‐1, Est‐2, Est‐3andEst‐4), a single transferin (Tf) and another major β‐globulin locus (Bg) were identified by segregational analysis.Est‐3seems to be a monomorphic. locus. Three alleles ofEst‐1, two ofEst‐2, two ofEst‐4, four ofTfand two alleles ofBgwere found in the laboratory population. None of these loci were closely linked. Electrophoretic patterns of F1hybrids confirmed the monomeric structures of each of the studied proteins. Allelic segregation at theTfandBgloci was normal in F2and backcross populations. In crosses of the twoMacropodussubspecies there were deviations from Mendelian ratios because of missing recombinant esterase phenotypes. Each of these would have been homozygousEst‐2f/f. SummaryTo evaluate genetic variability in two populations of the wild quailCofurnix coturnix japonica, proteins and enzymes were examined by starch gel electrophoresis.Rare variants so far not observed in domestic quail were found in the following five enzymes; aspartate aminotransferase, acid phosphatase, pancreatic esterase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase. The proportion of polymorphic loci (Ppoly) and the expected average heterozygosity (H) in one of the two populations were estimated to be 0.484 (15/31) and 0.085, respectively. Those in another population were 0.433 (13/30) and 0.086, respectively. The genetic distance (Nei, 1975) between the two wild quail populations wasD= 0.0074.Dvalues of 0.0321 and 0.0189 were estimated between the laboratory quail population previously examined (Kimura et al., 1982) and each of these two wild populations.

SummaryTwo glycosphingolipids with J blood group activity were found in J‐positive bovine spleen. They were tentatively identified as ceramide deca‐ and dodecahexosides containing galactose, glucose,N‐acetylgalactosamine andN‐acetylglucosamine in a molar ratio of 5:3:1:1 and 6:3:2:1, respectively. Fucose was not present. Ceramide decahexosides without J activity were also found in J‐negative bovine spleen. The principal component fatty acids of the J‐active glycosphingolipids were saturated even‐numbered long‐chain acids with 16 to 24 C atoms. Their principal long‐chain bases were sphingosine and dihydrosphingosine with smaller amounts of phy‐tosphingosine.Both J‐active glycosphingolipids were readily water‐soluble and showed strong activity in the bovine J and in the porcine A blood group system. SummaryIn the musk shrew (Suncus murinus), the electrophoretic bands in the post‐albumin region were identified as vitamin D binding protein (Gc) by the [3HI vitamin D3binding method. Three Gc phenotypes were distinguished from each other: a single faster band (Gc‐A), a single slower band (Gc‐B) and the double bands (Gc‐AB). Results of mating experiments indicated that the Gc‐A and Gc‐B are controlled by two codominant alleles,CcaandGcbat an autosomal locus (Cc), respectively. It was noticed that, in the Gc‐AB phenotypes, the Gc‐B band was constantly more intense than the Gc‐A band in the protein staining. The same tendency was also observed btween the homozygous Gc‐A and Gc‐B bands, and further, radioactivity of the Gc‐B bound with [3H] vitamin D3was about twofold higher than that of the Gc‐A.
